I can make a nice easy happy film now - Vikas Bahl

Life has come a full circle for Vikas Bahl. A film that initially failed to find many takers is today being revered as one of the best ever to have emerged from the stables of Indian cinema in recent times. Queen today has been etched in Bollywood pantheon as that one true movie which delighted both audience and critics alike. Just hours after winning the National award for the Best Hindi feature film, the soft spoken Vikas Bahl shared his happiness with the media. Excerpts from the interview.

Many congratulations, Vikas. How does it feel?

Thank you very much. When we were making Queen, we were just thinking of completing this film somehow. When the film was finally complete, we started worrying about its release. Those were two big impediments that we had deal with. We got our funding only on the 10th day of the shoot and by that time we had almost packed our bags to head back home from Paris. Mr. Vikram Malhotra and Viacom helped us see through that journey. Today after going through a journey like that, anything else is just an icing on the cake.

Who will you dedicate this award to?

I will dedicate it to Vikram Malhotra(former COO of Viacom 18) because he was the one guy who agreed to support us after hearing just 10 lines of the film. I had knocked doors of every studio trying to raise the money but none agreed. Vikram stood by us and despite a lot of internal resistance he saw through the film. It is easy for a director to fall in love with the script and to try and see it as a good film but for a producer these journeys are much more difficult because he is trying to get what you are trying to do and it takes really good producers to understand what that director is trying to do and specially in the case where the script has been rejected by many studios.

Would there be any additional pressure on your shoulders now as far as future films go?

(Smiles) Not at all. Now I can make an easy film. I will make a nice easy happy film.

Bollywood has won a lot of awards this time unlike previous years where regional cinema has always ruled the roost. How do you see this change?

I think a lot of regional work is pushing us think better, smarter because some story telling whether it is in Bengali or Marathi or any other language is so good that it is pushing us to think further and work harder on our screenplay. It is good that they have pushed us today.

This will be your second appearance at the National Awards after Chillar Party. Any memories?

Last time during Chillar Party, we had done a practise of sorts deciding how to walk onto the stage to receive the award and what to do on stage. It is an exercise. Almost ek din ka rehearsal lagta hai. This time too we will decide what to wear. So it's going to be a lot of hard work. But it's an honour and like my father said when you will die it will be written national award winner Vikas Bahl. It's a tag that you would love to live with for a lifetime.

What does Kangana have to say about the twin victories?

I couldn't wish Kangana on her birthday. Kangana and I are close and know the struggles we went through. So emotionally, it is another level for us and right now it is beyond a point that we can't express our happiness and can just congratulate each other and catch up and chat about it. It's been a  sort of emotional thriller for both of us.

Kangana renounced all popular awards last year. Will she be present in person to accept her National Award?

I think so and I hope so.

Do you think National awards are credible?

Everything we got was very credible.
