Jean-Marc Vallee on break from direction

Director Jean-Marc Vallee, who just received a timely career tribute at the Vancouver Film Festival, is on a break from direction for eight months.

"I burnt myself out. I'm so tired. I'm on a break, have been for a month, and I have seven more to go. I'm taking eight months to recharge my batteries and to get my life back," the 55-year-old told a leading online portal.

Valle helmed all of the episodes of the Big Little Lies last year, for which he won an Emmy as best director, and this year he shot the thriller series Sharp Objects.

He added, "It's a marathon, a Herculean effort for a director to direct all the episodes. I shot 180 days in 20 months, Big Little Lies and then Sharp Objects. They were overlapping."

Vallee said it wasn't his choice to become a workaholic since six years ago earning multiple Oscar nominations for Dallas Buyers Club.

"It just happened. And I've paid. I didn't go through a burnout, but I need the break I'm on now," he insisted.

Vallee's upcoming projects include Les Temps Magiques, the third of a film trilogy he did during the 1990s after Les Fleurs Magiquesand Les Mots Magiques, with the feature script already written.

Cheryl's new music to be '100 per cent personal'

Singer Cheryl says her new music will be "100 per cent personal" and will show fans her "vulnerability" following split with former One Direction star Liam Payne.

Cheryl is putting the finishing touches to her first solo album in four years.

In a chat with the Daily Star, her collaborator and super producer Naughty Boy said the "Fight For This Love" hitmaker had written songs from the heart and shown a different side of herself for the new album.

"It is 100 per cent personal and it's about time people got to know the real Cheryl," he said.

"I think when you are writing songs, there is a different vulnerability and that comes out through songwriting, so I am proud of her that she got more involved this time and not just as a singer. The lyrics really mean something to her - sometimes you have to put a bit of heart for people to see that there is a real struggle," he added.

He said becoming a mother to son Bear, 18 months, had changed the former Girls Aloud singer.

Payne and Cheryl, who have a 10-year age gap and first met when he auditioned for the X Factor at 14, confirmed reports that they were dating in February 2016, and they parted ways in July 2018.

Cheryl later kept fans guessing for months before confirming her pregnancy in the most public way - at a L'Oreal photoshoot, in which she posed in a close-fitting black dress and cradled her bump.

The couple confirmed the birth of son bear on Mother's Day 2017, posting identical Instagram posts of Payne cradling their newborn baby.

"I called 911, but by the time they got there, it was too late. Geoff suffered from heart problems for a long time and had a pacemaker... When it's your time it's your time. We lost a legend and a best friend to me and a mentor."

Emerick began working as an assistant engineer at Abbey Road at just 15 years old and just a few months in, was face-to-face with John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in the London studio.

He apprenticed and later worked on such early Beatles' recordings as "Love Me Do", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", "She Loves You" and "A Hard Day's Night". Later becoming the band's chief engineer, he helmed "Revolver", "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", "The White Album" and "Abbey Road" as well as the dual-sided single "Penny Lane", "Strawberry Fields Forever."

Emerick was a Grammy Award winner for his work on "Sgt. Pepper's" and "Abbey Road" as well as Paul McCartney and Wings' "Band on the Run".

Tyson visited Mumbai and Agra.

"Though he visited Dharavi and Taj Mahal, he didn't indulge in any popular touristy activities as such. Since I was accompanying him, a lot of fans approached me in the hope that Salman Khan and Mike Tyson would be getting into the ring together for the league.

"Once you work with Salman Khan, handling any celebrity becomes a cakewalk."

Tyson also appreciated Shera's security services.

Elle Fanning inspired by Angelina Jolie

"I was 14 when I did the first movie, now I'm 20," Fanning told a leading publication.

She spoke about how their relationship has evolved since they first worked together.

"I wasn't as young now so Angelina and I got to relate on a different level now that I'm older."

Fanning relished the experience of reuniting with the Oscar-winning star, and said to being inspired by her work ethic.

"We actually got very close on the second one. Very close. She's amazing! She does a lot and is very inspiring to work with. To see how she handles the business and also she's the producer so to see that side of things, to see her with her producer hat on, I learned a lot."

John Krasinski's balancing act

John Krasinski has made for himself as an actor, director and producer. And he says balancing them all is not at all tough.

Asked how he balances everything, Krasinski said, "When you say it like that I get worried, and think how I am balancing it."

On a serious note, he added, "The reason why I do all these things is because when I got The Office I thought I was so lucky and that I didn't deserve it. So, I started learning everything so that they think I deserve it. I started going in editing bays, directing, writing, getting a sense of the whole world. I feel when you get an opportunity one should do what it takes."

Krasinski spoke on his career choices when he appeared at the Prime Video event at Mayfair's historic Curzon Cinemas here.

He took a break from shooting the second season of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan to announce new characters including his "new female counterpart, a friend and enemy of Jack, played by Noomi Rapace"

"She has been amazing, we are lucky to have her. And from 'House of Cards' we have Michael Kelly, playing my CIA boss," he said.

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, which hails from the Lost duo of co-showrunner Carlton Cuse and writer Graham Roland, Platinum Dunes, Skydance Media and Paramount TV, is a reinvention with a modern sensibility of the famed and lauded Tom Clancy hero, starring Krasinski and Abbie Cornish.

It centres on Jack Ryan (Krasinski), an up-and-coming CIA analyst thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. He uncovers a pattern in terrorist communications that launches him into the centre of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale. It streams on Amazon Prime Video.

On the show, the actor said, "I got lucky by doing a long form of storytelling because it is hard to make a movie with that much incredible material and rich detail."

'Homecoming' did wonders for my personal life: Julia Roberts

Hollywood’s “Pretty Woman" Julia Roberts is entering the world of the small screen with the thriller Homecoming. She says she stayed away from television for this long due to lack of offers.

Roberts started her career in Hollywood in 1987 with Crime Story, and walked up the stairs of fame with the success of projects likePretty Woman, Erin Brockovich, My Best Friend's Wedding, Notting Hill, Runaway Bride, Ocean's Eleven, Valentine's Day, Eat Pray Love, Money Monster and The Normal Heart.

Why did she stay away from the small screen for so long?

"The lack of being offered a TV show probably. This (‘Homecoming') was such a great piece of material. I wasn't making a choice to do TV. I was making a choice to go where I thought the work was interesting," Roberts told a publication in a group interview on the sidelines of Prime Video Presents 2018 event here.

"My request was to have one director for all the episodes and that's what I needed. I didn't want to have a different person every week trying to understand the way my brain works. It seemed unfair to the society," she added on a lighter note.

However, Roberts said the makers didn't think about TV while working on the show.

"Sam Esmail really set this up like a movie and I like to think, for me. It was not dissimilar in the process of creating it from a film," she added.

The show, adapted from a podcast with the same name, follows the life of case worker-turned-waitress Heidi Bergman (Roberts) as she struggles to remember her time working at a facility that treats soldiers returning from war. The trailer also shows how Heidi begins to suspect something more suspicious at the heart of the program with one of her patients Walter, essayed by Stephan James.

Created and written by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, the show is directed by Esmail -- the man behind Mr. Robot.

"The show did wonders for my personal life. I was so happy that I am me and they are them," said the Oscar-winning actress.

Now, the actress is looking forward to opening the "complex and fascinating" world in front of the audience with the show, which will go live on Amazon Prime Video in November.

"It is a whole package. The whole story is so complex and fascinating with really interesting ideas in characters that reveal themselves in very unique way. Playing two different characters was interesting -- what are the differences, and what are the things that she is aware of and not aware of... Sometimes I would think that I am telling the truth, and Sam would be like, ‘No, you are lying'."

Other cast members of Homecoming include Bobby Cannavale, Shea Whigham, Jeremy Allen White, Alex Karpovsky and Roberts' My Best Friend's Wedding co-star Dermot Mulroney.
