The myth surrounding the original Valentine is a legend. In the third century, Roman Emperor Claudius II was of the firm opinion that his soldiers would be most efficient if they were young and single men who weren't tied-up in familial relationships. To achieve this for his army, Claudius banned marriage for men at their fighting prime. Bishop Valentine purportedly felt it was unjust and took it upon himself to unite young lovers secretly. When Claudius found out, he sentenced Valentine to death and had him incarcerated.
