Music Director Inder Bawra of Devon Ke Dev Mahadev (Life OK) is a versatile person. Having been in this industry for long, he composes songs along with his younger brother Sunny Bawra. Weaving songs, is not a child’s play, it needs a lot of creativity and patience. And for a mythological, composing numbers is very tedious as the target audience is set. Here, the task is to get the younger lot glued to the television that Inder has been successfully doing so. Today, Devon Ke Dev Mahadev is the number one show on the channel and so is its music that is hummed by people of all walks of life. We corner Inder for our Behind the Lens section while he is in his recording room getting ready for a take. Excerpts: Tell us how did you begin your journey in the world of music? I am born and raised in Bhatinda, Punjab, where I also studied music. Later, I came to Mumbai and started composing music for various shows. I was very clear in my aim to become a music director. I had the knack of music since childhood and even my family belongs to music fraternity. In short, there is no harm if I say that music is in my blood. Furthermore, I and my younger brother, Sunny Bawra, are into composing music and have composed some numbers for Jai Sree Krishna on Colors, Meera, Veer Shivaji, Jhansi Ki Rani and Navya for various other channels. Currently, we are composing for Devon Ke Dev Mahadev. What is your job profile? I am a music director and my job is to compose music for television serials along with my brother. As part of my job, I have to be on the sets for two or three days. But, at times I get a narration over the phone. Basically, I get the script and compose the background music as per the requirement, but for the title song and the background score, we need to sit with concerned people in the channel. This is not boasting, but I am proud to say that all our scores have been approved by the channels concerned in the very first go. Mostly, we have set timelines and deadlines that we need to adhere to, but when we are not able to compose music in a short span, we raise our hands in despair. Is it taxing to create music for Mahadev? No, it’s not. I believe I have a power that Lord Shiva has given us …the insight and the strength to create music. We haven’t faced difficulties ever. Did you face any difficulties during the journey? No, I have been blessed with good people around who are very nice and helpful. How is it to work with the lead of Mahadev… Mohit Raina? Mohit Raina is a very hard working actor; he puts his heart and soul. He does yoga and also goes into mediation to get the feel of Lord Shiva. I must say that he has reached the depth of the character he plays. I say this confidently that no one can be as good as Mohit. He is great to work with; in fact the more I get to know the person in him, I am able to compose much more for him. At times he gives his own inputs. How do you take or face competition? I feel Mahadev is self competent; it just has no competition at all. Has composing music changed you as a person? Music is life and it heals the mind and body. I feel that I have become all the more calm and composed and feel very blissful and divine. You and Sunny compose together. Hasn’t there been any difference of opinion? Yes, there have been. Both of us have our point of views and understanding but then we take advice from each other and respect each other’s decisions. But, we always take the final call which would be best for the show. Differences only occur when we all work towards a goal that is to make it the best. Who is your biggest critic and fan? My brother Sunny; he is my biggest critic and fan too. Here I would like to mention the names of my gurus without I would have not achieved anything. They are...my grandfather, Mohinder Singh Bawra, my father, Major Singh Bawra and my guruji (music) N R Pawan. What are your future plans? If we get to compose for movies, fair enough or else I am here to stay with Mahadev.
