Daily soaps will never be out of trend: Pritha Dalal, Creative Head

Pritha Dalal, Creative Head

A Bachelor’s degree in economics from the prestigious Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi, and a comfortable luxurious life in Delhi could not simply satisfy the young talent, Pritha Dalal. Always interested in performing arts, Pritha has now created a niche for herself in the industry as the Creative Head of Ashoka and Maharana Pratap.

In conversation with Tellychakkar.com, Pritha shared her journey from Lady Shriram College to working with the renowned production house, Contiloe.

Tell us something about your journey in the industry...

Hailing from Delhi, I completed my graduation in Economics from Lady Shri Ram College, but was never satisfied with academic excellence. Trained in classical dance and music, I was always interested in performing arts and was keen on pursuing a career in the same field. So, somehow I gathered my courage and came to Mumbai and initially joined an advertisement agency in the production team. Then I joined Crime Patrol and did a couple of independent films.

So, how did Ashoka happen to you?

Before Ashoka I was busy with Crime Patrol for two years. Though crime dramas were initiated with a good intention, I was somehow bored with it. With the show being based on real stories, I was creatively saturated with the show and realized I had nothing new to do. So I decided to take a break for two years and then joined Ashoka and Maharana Pratap.

Do you think that handling period dramas are more difficult?

In some ways it is. Before these two shows I never did a costume drama, hence hardly had no idea about the same. Before doing such shows we need to do lots of research to get a clear vision of the contemporary society. We have to mainly apply our historical visions in the content.

Did you face any problems while doing so?

Fortunately enough I have never faced any difficulties in the industry, except for my initial days. I came to Mumbai to pursue my dreams and had complete support of my parents. But naturally as a grown up child I wanted to take responsibility of my own without asking for help from my parents. Hence, leaving a life of luxury and joining a job in a different city was for sure difficult.

What is the most important quality of a creative head?

According to me the most important quality that a creative head should possess is the problem-solving attitude. A creative head is responsible for whatever is happening on the set and is answerable for the success or failure of a show. Any professional in this field should be able to solve any issues related to the show or people involved with the show.

Is there anything that you regret about your profession?

The only thing that sometimes becomes difficult to handle is that my job needs my attention for 24*7 hours. Even if I am not present at the set, I have to take care that everything is running successfully. And even if someone wants to inform me something at the middle of the night, I have to make sure that they can reach out to me. But then again this is one profession, which I chose knowing about the pros and cons of it. Hence, I cannot complain about it and I am happy that I am pursuing what I always wanted to.

Do you think that television has changed over the years?

Gradually the television scenario is changing with many episodic and weekly shows coming up. I think even content wise there have been some changes. Even finite series are trending these days and audience are gradually accepting the changes if not completely. But honestly speaking, I believe that daily shows will never go out of trend, as Indian viewers are fond of daily dramas and I don’t think that they are ready to change their taste soon. But, I really hope that the change happens soon, where they will accept some new trends.

Finally, what is your long term goal?

Currently, I am doing two shows and I am satisfied with it. But now, I want to do a show of my own with my own concept. I want to develop that thought into a proper show. I really hope that I will be able to do that soon.

We wish the young lady all the best.
