Prabhjot Singh Kwatra, associate director of two well known Balaji shows, Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh and Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, came to Mumbai from Amritsar to become an actor. How did your career in this showbiz industry start?

I was born and brought up in Amritsar in Punjab. After completing my graduation I decided to come to Mumbai to become an actor. After doing few shows I realized that in order to survive in this city I need to earn more and hence started directing ad films and television serials. Later on I also directed few short films.

For how long you are in this industry and which are the shows you have worked till date?

I have been into this industry for six and a half years and have worked in many shows. Initially I  made YouTube videos for brands like Audi and Skoda. Then I worked in shows like Shaurya Aur Suhani, Rishton Ke Bhanwar Mein Uljhi Niyati, Yahaan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli, Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam, Santaan- Har Khushi Hai Tumse, Banoo Main Teri Dulhann, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah and finally ended up working with Balaji Telefilms in their two shows namely, Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh and Yeh Hai Mohabbatein. I have also directed one Punjabi film featuring popular actor Karan Kundra and have also directed Punjabi music albums.

Did your family support you?

Yes, my family has always been very supportive. When I told them about my plans to shift in Mumbai, my parents never stopped me and encouraged me to follow my inner call. I would like to mention about my elder sister who has always supported me in every way possible.

With your family on your side, did you face any problem after coming to Mumbai?

Initially I came in this city to become an actor. Then I realized how difficult it was to survive in this city without any work. There was a point of time when I decided to go back, as I was jobless for a continuous stretch of six months.  But, my sister convinced me to stay back and fight and try out for new options. I always had a knack for direction as well; hence, I started working as an associate director to earn some money. Now I am very much happy and content with my profession as a director.

What about your acting career then?

I have already acted in famous SAB TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah as Amarjeet, Sodhi’s friend and in few episodic of Yeh Hai Ashiqui and CID. Currently I am concentrating fully on direction and I would like to pursue my career as a director only. Only if I get a good offer under big banner film then I will do it.

How was your experience working in the industry?

My journey in the industry has been one learning experience. Except for my initial days when I did not have enough work, my journey has mostly been wonderful. When you did not have your own identity then everyone starts to take advantage of your situation. Now, the situation is much different.

Who are your inspirations?

Karan Johar and Vikram Bhatt are my inspirations. I am a huge fan of Karan Johar and want to make films like him. Though romance is definitely not my genre as I would like to make mostly horror or comedy film, but I am very much inspired by his style of filmmaking.

Any memorable event you would like to share?

Recently, I gifted a car to my parents on their anniversary after so many years of struggle. I feel blessed that instead of stopping me to join this profession, they have always supported me. There is nothing more precious than watching your parents smiling.

What are your future plans?

Well, I am planning to direct an entire serial and I am also looking forward to work as an independent filmmaker. I am currently ready with four scripts, but looking for financers. Though talks are on but nothing has been finalized yet.
