Kushal Zaveri, director of Gumrah Season 1 and 2, and The Serial, is the one who shows reality on television. As a matter of fact, he is the one who exposed the ugly truth of children who loose their innocence in the storm of crime. It is Kushal’s firm intention to break rules and bring about a change in these orthodox television shows. Tellychakkar.com meets up with this one of a kind director for an interview for its Behind the Lens segment. Excerpts: Tell us something about yourself? (pauses) In my school days, I was not much into studies and was very much influenced by the world of entertainment. Thus I tried my luck as a model or a junior artist who got lost in the crowd at the age of 16. But, then growing every single day and getting to know the industry slowly, I realized that a person who is in this industry for the last 15 years earns the same kind of money which I earned as a newcomer. So I got a very clear vision of myself after being in the industry for 15 years. Then, direction was something which gave light to my dreams. So I got myself into direction and started assisting Santram Verma for around 3 to 4 years. From there, I started working independently as a director for the last 5 years. Later I got roped in for Gumrah for Channel [V] and also for The Serial. How has your journey been so far? I am a very curious person and like to gain knowledge about everything. This curious nature of mine has helped to grow every single day with changes happening all around. When I came into this field, I had a dream of becoming an actor on the lines of Shah Rukh Khan, but when I got to know the fact that there is no importance of people in the crowd and no scope of growth for them, I opted out and got into direction which gives me power to make a show on my own terms. How did Gumrah happen? (smiles) Look, Vikas Gupta (producer) and I are very good friends. It so happened that Vikas came up with the concept based on youth crimes by which I got influenced to no extent just by knowing the fact that the show is based on social message and will help to bring about a certain change in the society. The show doesn’t portray kids as hardcore criminals but innocence which at times leads to conduct crime. Our show conveys message to the youth who loose their temper and, at times, are not able to handle situations. How do you carry your work on the sets? The first and foremost thing is that I make myself very well convinced with what the script relates to me. Then I dig into the cast and clear their picture in my mind with the character. Then logically I start my work. Do you believe that as a director you first need to be an actor? No, I believe that if one needs to be a director, then he should know each and everything of the trade. Take it from the script, to the cast, to acting, to execution because after all, the director is the captain of the ship. As a director, I need to extract the talent from actors and find out the mindset of the audience to whom we cater our shows to. The list goes on but the job of a director is never ending. How much is creativity important for any show? The whole industry works on the mantra of creativity. Everyone's point of view is taken into consideration and a logical solution has to be found towards it. There has to be certain continuous changes brought about in television which is possible only through creativity because at one time even people will get bored with same old stuff. For a delightful visibility throughout creativity is most important. What are your fortes? I like thriller, action and reality shows. I am more of non-fiction person than fiction. Though I started my career by way of fiction, knew very well that I was not made for it. I believe in making things which stay for a longer period of time than one which stays long on television but goes away from mind very quickly. I love things which I can relate to in real life. What kind of reality shows would you want to get into? I am not the Bigg Boss kind of person because as a director there is no scope of growing in such reality shows. Keep 15 to 20 cameras in a house give them a theme for a fight and just capture what they do in the non-changeable location and show it to audience. Neither am I interested in shows like Satyamev Jayate because such shows are more of an investigative type which are portrayed like a debate kind of format. I want to show people the reality of life through which they can relate themselves to. What change would you like to bring in television, if any? Well, I like to break rules, create my own wonders, put in my own ideas. I don’t like to follow the same old pattern which leads one to reach his/her saturation level. What advice would you like to give to new aspiring directors? Believe in yourself, listen to your mind, do what your heart says because don’t be in a rat race but create your own race. Break rules and bring changes because television is in dearth of variety which is considered to be spice of life. What are your future plans? I want to bring some more reality concepts. Want to make shows that are of 30 episodes each but leave an effect in minds of people and the society.
