I have been working with Mr Bachchan for the last 12 years - Writer RD Tailang

RD Tailang is a real lucky lad. And folks…he himself confesses it as he is one of the lucky few who happened to have worked with the living legend Amitabh Bachchan. Yes, RD is the one who has been writing the dialogues and scripts for Big B since season one of Kaun Banega Crorepati. Hence, as the editor of Tellychakkar.com, I decided to talk to him for the behind the lens section. Excerpts: Share your journey since the day you came to Mumbai to bagging KBC?

Yes, RD is the one who has been writing the dialogues and scripts for Big B since season one of Kaun Banega Crorepati. Hence, as the editor of Tellychakkar.com, I decided to talk to him for the behind the lens section. Excerpts:

Share your journey since the day you came to Mumbai to bagging KBC?

My journey started in Tikamgarh, MP as I was born and brought up there. Back there I used to write articles and make cartoons. Once I came to Mumbai for some work and just fell in love with the place. I loved the warmth in the city. That is when I decided to stay at my relatives’ place and learn more about the city.

Continue…

I did carry some of my articles and cartoons here. And one fine day I submitted them to a newspaper called Do Baje Dopahar. They liked my work and hired me as a cartoonist. I worked with that publication for three years. I also took a lot of interviews and got to know people from entertainment field.

How did TV happen?

During my journalism days… TV was growing and it was something new to everybody. So I thought why not take it up. That is when I joined a production house which was run jointly by Amit Khanna and Mahesh Bhatt…and they made a lot of shows for DD. I joined them as a writer for their non-fiction show Mirch Masala. There I also worked as an assistant director. While I was working on the project…the thought of doing something on my own hit me. That’s when I started freelancing as a writer. I did struggle for a long time as I was new and getting work wasn’t that easy. My first freelance work was Star Yaar Kalakar which was anchored by Farida Jalal. I was the writer for that show.

After that I got to work on Movers and Shakers. Luckily it turned out to be a super hit show. I was not the only writer on this project and there were others too. So when the makers of KBC planned to come up with its first season they started looking out for writers and I was called along with many others. This was in 2000. We were asked to write a piece for Mr. Bachchan and guess what…Big B liked my script. This is when my journey in KBC started. From then there has been no looking back.

No wonder you’re called the voice of Mr. Bachchan…

Voice of Mr. Bachchan is a very big title… I don’t think I would accept it. But the tuning with Mr. Bachchan has been such that whatever work sir has done on TV, I have been a part of it. I have understood his language and style which helps me as a writer.

It’s a great respect to write for such a good human being. I have been working with him for the last 12 years…and I am blessed.

You were the writer of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani which was also Ranbir Kapoor’s commercial hit. So why didn’t you take up more film projects?

After being a part of a film… I felt really good especially because it was a commercial hit. I did get the inner satisfaction as a writer. I got a lot of offers after that and a lot of advices too. People told me that it was my time to cash in on the success but I am not a very aggressive person by nature. I just can’t do work because it is coming to me. Some people thing from mind some people think from heart, I fall in the second category. I couldn’t be part of the commercial exploitation. People wanted me to do more comedy but since I had the TV backing I could choose. And yes I did say a ‘no’ to a lot of projects but I did do films after Ajab Ghazab.

My next film was Arjun - The Warrior Prince, it was an animated film but I loved the script. People did ask me questions like why I did not take up a film like Golmaal, Dhamaal or Malamaal Weekly but I did what I liked. I did two more films after that but they weren’t box office hits.

We are sure you’re aware of the new clause for the writers wherein the writers will get their works copyright and a lot of people are opposing it. Whose side are you on?

I am a writer and I am with the writers…and more than that I am in support of honesty. I feel writers are yet to get their due money and respect. And thankfully… things are being settled legally now. This will definitely worry the producers and the channels but the writers are just asking for their right and it should be given.

Tell us something about your production house, Sequin Entertainment?

I used to see a lot of sequin in women’s saris and if you’ve noticed they add to the shine element in their attire. Similarly, when we planned to come up with this production house we wanted to make projects that would add to the shine of the entertainment industry… that is why we named it Sequin Entertainment. We’ve just started… so we are still working on the concepts.

You’ve worked with Mr. Bachchan for 12 years… so don’t you think you must cast him in your first project?

This is a dream… if it comes true nothing like it. I don’t think I could have a bigger launch for my production house.
