The industry is focussing on quantitative than qualitative work: Producer Nikhil Sinha

Producer Nikhil Sinha

And when you dream, dream big,
As big as the ocean, blue.
'Cause when you dream it might come true.
But when you dream, dream big...”

Remember the song of Ryan Shupe??

Even if you don’t, producer Nikhil Sinha truly goes by the song.

After giving birth to one of the biggest success in mytho genres, Mahadev, the creative guru got back with his magnum opus Siya Ke Ram on Star Plus under his banner Triangle Films. Along with loosening up his purse's strings as a producer and shooting extensively in Hyderabad for his 'cinema-like experience' show, the man also got behind the camera to shoot few episodes of the daily.

One of the most sought after producer-director today, Nikhil possesses the skill to bring alive characters and story. With just two shows under his belt, Nikhil has managed to set his foothold strong in the industry today

Getting into an exclusive chat with Tellychakkar.com, the producer bares his heart on Siya Ke Ram’s low numbers, current regressive content on TV, competition and more...

Excerpts-

With a story like Ramayan, known to all, how did it come across to present the story again? Have you managed to achieve what you wanted with Siya Ke Ram?

More or less yes. Ramayan is still a difficult subject to project because the original Ramayan has different versions and people already know about them. We chose to go for a human point of view rather than taking the typical, religious and devotional sides. It did take time for people to absorb it but now they have accepted it and enjoying the same.

There were massive expectations with Siya Ke Ram but the numbers are
not that impressive, how has that affected you?

Unfortunately Siya Ke Ram is a show ahead of its time. It has come in a stage when the industry is into incarnation. Also if you see, last month people were busy with IPL so the entire numbers had dropped on the 7:30 pm slot. But in general, the highest rating is around 3, so 2.5 is definitely not bad.

What are the challenges you face while shooting in Hyderabad.

Any costume drama is difficult to make and specially Siya Ke Ram. When you make a daily, a lot of planning is needed; a lot of efforts and a lot of man power and leadership are required. It's a huge ensemble team which pulls the show through. As for shooting at Ramoji, it is really challenging and at the same time beneficial as there is an ample of space to work.

Is Suhana (wife Suhana Sinha)  involved in the show?

Costumes and the entire look part are being taken care by her.

Do you want to stick to the mytho genre or will we ever see you producing saas-bahu dramas also?

I am really interested but again, while I was opening myself to saas- bahu drama it has gone into major regression where somebody is turning into mosquito. So at the time when I was on my way to understand the genre, now suddenly I will have to re-understand the genre because it has changed into animals. I think I will have to re-study the entire saas-bahu genre again.

With shows becoming seven days, as a producer, do you support the change? What kind of struggles does this bring?

It is a difficult job for everyone in the production house, and it also affects the quality of the show. A story has its own pace and when you try to extend it forcibly, the story falls flat and you lose on your audience. Currently, I see a cumulative drop in the numbers as viewership has reduced. The industry is going towards quantitative than qualitative and so everything is losing track.

With your shows having a film like scale, any plans of moving to Bollywood?

Yes certainly, we are short listing good scripts and we have found couple of them.

And what about finite show, do you want to try your hands at it?

Yes I am looking forward to make a show. Making finite show of any genre has a huge scope. It could be based on any time period but the story should be interesting.

Who do you take as your competition in the industry?

Everybody is doing their job and everyone has their own expertise, so if you are working on the same genre, then it is competition. I feel that everybody is doing their bit excellently and we all lack in something or the other. So there is no score system, but everyone is faring well.

What is your take on the 'naagin', 'makhi' tracks that are winning numbers for producers?

It's a very tricky thing to say, discuss or understand. A story like Naagin has a good screenplay. So first, it is the story line but then how you develop it is more important. But now it is becoming cliché.

But we need to notice what we are giving to the industry and our future generations. It is important we give them something to look forward.

So do you feel regressive content manages to get tears of audience and numbers for channel?

I don't think anybody cries watching television. The trick is in using such a background score that people would feel something drastic is going to happen even when there is nothing exciting. That’s the kind of visual treat that works.

What are the new projects in line?

Working on couple of things I can't discuss right now.

And how do you manage family life with such a hectic schedule as a producer?

It affects a lot. Your mind tends to work 24 hours but along with that when your body starts working too, it becomes difficult. I somehow manage to get some time out of the hectic schedule as you cannot ignore family.
