There needs to be a change in the way TAM functions: Anita Kaul Basu

Anita Kaul Basu

Anita Kaul Basu, Director of Big Synergy, who is considered to be the Queen of non-fiction shows, has given a new dimension to Indian television by producing some superb projects. As a matter of fact, she along with hubby Siddharth Basu, has taken Big Synergy to greater heights. Tellychakkar.com entered into a candid chat with Anita. Excerpts:

Now that KBC is back, what new can we expect this season?

(smiles) Hmm! My lips are sealed. Right now, I am not in a stage of revealing anything related to KBC’s new season. But yes, this time there will be some interesting and good changes.

Apart from KBC what are the other projects that Big Synergy has planned for television?

Apart from KBC, there is Marathi KBC which is currently being aired. Right now, we are still in the process of coming up with more ideas for non-fiction formats. So for now, you will have to wait and watch to learn more about Big Synergy projects.

Out of the current non-fiction shows on television, which one would you give a thumps up and why?

(pauses) I think I will pick Sony TV’s Indian Idol Junior because the way they treat the kids is nice and warm. They infuse courage and confidence in kids, which is brilliant. After all, the show is not about where the kids come from, but what they got within.

Amitabh Bachchan is entering the fiction space on television. Your comments…

It is a very interesting space for Amitabhji and he is not as such a newcomer on television. In fact, he understands television very well and will excel in whatever he does. I believe that it will be fun watching him.

There have been reports about IBF’s tiff with TAM. Are you in favour of doing away with ratings?

The ratings, that have been around for a long period of time, need some definite changes. Since TAM on TV began, there have been many changes which the medium has seen. There need to be some drastic changes which will help the television space grow fairly. The methodology has to become more transparent and evolved. It has to be much more acceptable and digestible.

According to you, how will television evolve in the coming years?

I think the interactivity is one big changing trend that involves great people and media as well. It is helping to bring very important regulations and customization of channels, programmes as well. The TAM rating which is catering the professionals is also getting customized. The international trends of shows that are seasonal-based are emerging on Indian television.

When it comes to Indian television, non-fiction shows are always modeled on international projects. What about indigenous formats?

(pauses) See, from the broadcaster’s point of view, international shows have already made a mark in everybody’s mind that has helped them gain popularity. So, it becomes easier to pick up the well established concept and portray it by adding in some of our spice. The trend which is already going on makes things easier than making a different format altogether. In television, time is money and for any new show to evolve, it involves a lot of planning. So this mindset needs to change; but there is no option as of now but to follow what’s in demand.

Talking about you, how satisfied are you as a professional?

(smiles) I believe that we are still shooting in the dark because in terms of programming, there is not much of a difference that is taken into consideration. This bar of programming needs to be increased and the market representation should acquire some very important aspects of what our country is in need of. As a producer, there is still a frustration of no proper commitment towards the quality content. This industry needs some very good professionals who believe in bringing change than just being a part of the race. There needs to be some institution which will help to give us some utterly skilled people in terms of knowledge exposure to this field.

In an earlier interview with Tellychakkar.com, you mentioned that you wanted to work less and see the world with Siddharth. So, what’s happening on that front?

That little dream is yet to fructify but I am hopeful that it will happen very soon. Currently, we are so much into the digital framework, that the kind of programming television is getting into keeps us involved into lot of on-field travelling.

Any comments before we wind up?

I pray and hope that television evolves with quality work which focuses towards creativity. The new fiction shows grow up more efficiently with some very important and definite changes within. And there never arises the role of compromising towards quality content of any show when taken into consideration.
