Gay relationship in Star Plus’ MaryadaIndian television has come a long way and today’s viewers are more mature and open when it comes to shows that deal with diverse, poignant and even those issues which the pseudo-moralists of the society term as “taboo”. Kudos to the makers of Maryada, DJ’s A Creative Unit, who took the splurge ahead and first time came up with a storyline that deals with gay relationship between Gaurav (Dakssh Ajit Singh) and Karan (Karan). The world watched the emotionally charged scene wherein Gaurav broke his relationship with Karan as he was scared of his family. Thousands of gay men across the world could relate to the scene. But thankfully, later things did shape up. We can proudly say that Maryada infused a new lease of life to the Indian television industry.
Sushant Singh quitting Pavitra RishtaSo much was written about Sushant Singh Rajput quitting Zee TV’s Pavitra Rishta. In the show, he played the character of Manav and his chemistry with Archana Lokhande (Archana) made people sweat in front of their TV screens. Tellychakkar.com was the first to break the news of him facing the camera for the last time for the show on 23 October 2011. Sushant did talk to us and went on to say that he decided to move on to try out new things in life. Well, we hope the handsome hunk touches greater heights in life!!!

Launch of Ra.One’s music on Star PlusShah Rukh “King” Khan chalked out innovative and effective ways to promote his film Ra.One. The movie, which introduced a new leaf to the history of Indian cinema, was liked by critics and the masses alike. Now, for the first time ever, a movie’s music launch took place on national television. In a glamour-coated event titled “Chammak Challo”, Shah Rukh launched Ra.One’s music on Star Plus. It started a new trend altogether!!!

Ammaji playing double role in LaadoColors’ Na Aana Iss Des Laado is a show based on female infanticide and atrocities against women. And the character of Ammaji has played a crucial role in the daily right from the beginning. Though the series took a leap some time back, Ammaji’s character still holds the prime position in the household. And just recently the audiences received the shock their lifetime when they saw the character in a double role. While Ammaji was busy preparing for election campaign, she was kidnapped from the podium in a political rally. The family was shocked and started to search her but they were surprised to see that Ammaji already at the home, who was not the real Ammaji but her, look alike Anjali Chaudhary.
Anand Chopra’s death in ParichayEkta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms’ is known to bring in wicked twists and turns in its serials and Parichay aired on Color’s witnessed that when the loving Anand Chopra died in a bomb blast. Everybody was in the mood of celebration in the Chopra household. Everyone was busy preparing for Siddhi (Keerti Nagpure) and Anand’s (Saurabh Raj Jain) marriage. Just on the day of their marriage, the would-be groom Anand died in a bomb blast. And what followed was a series of dramatic situations. But the most important event was Siddhi getting married to Kunal Chopra, eldest brother of Anand and the protagonist of the daily.
Launch of Sanjeev Kapoor’s FOOD FOOD channelFor Indian TV audiences, a food based show meant a show which would teach them a new recipe in every episode. Over the years, the concept altered and the viewers got acquainted to varied concepts such as travel based food show, celebrity food show, food lifestyle series, etc. Sadly, all these culinary series were aired on specific days only and the viewers would have to wait for the next episode to increase their gastronomic knowledge. But, luckily celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor launched a dedicated channel for food this year. Named FOOD FOOD, the channel is a food lifestyle channel and has the Dhak Dhak girl, Madhuri Dixit as its the brand ambassador.
Sony overtaking Colors in the battle of TRPsGeneral Entertainment Channel, Colors had been holding the number two position in TAM ratings, all thanks to its path-breaking shows like Balika Vadhu, Na Aana Iss Des Laado, etc. Sony Entertainment, on the other hand, had been desperately trying to get back into the TRP race for quite some time, and regain the prime position that it enjoyed a few years ago, but had slipped down since other channels gained more viewership. And luckily for Sony its new shows did the needful. Sony Entertainment replaced Colors’ second position as per TAM data for the week ended 20 August 2011. This is attributed to its popular game show, Kaun Banega Crorepati hosted by Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and the mature love story, Balaji Telefilms’ Bade Achhe Lagte Hain.
Common man coming back on TV with SAB TV’s R K Laxman Ki DuniyaFor nearly five decades, award winning cartoonist R K Laxman brought out the issues the common man faces through his cartoon strips. And millions of people grabbed a copy of the newspaper only to know which problem has been addressed in the cartoon strip today, which was called The Common Man. Though many have been missing the living legend R K Laxman’s comic strips, SAB TV gave them an opportunity sit back and enjoy the same at the comfort of their home. Its show R K Laxman Ki Duniya is based on the works of the famous cartoonist and illustrator.
Vansh returning in UttaranColors’ Uttaran has always wooed its audiences with its dramatic script. Be it Tapasya (Rashmi Desai) getting married to Veer (Nandish Sandhu) in place of Ichcha (Tina Dutta) or Tapasya claiming to be pregnant with Veer’s child, when in fact their marriage was never consummated, the daily has managed to shock its viewers every now and then. Continuing with the trend the recently shocked the viewers, bringing in the late Vansh (Rohit Khurana) back into the Bundela house. Though this character is a lookalike of Vansh, Uttaran’s ardent fans received the shock of their lifetime.
Formation of BCCCOff late, the Indian audiences have been raising hue and cry because of the indiscriminate use of foul language and increasing vulgar content on Indian TV. Taking a cue from this, The Indian Broadcasting Federation (IBF) formed self-regulatory guidelines and a complaints redressal mechanism through the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) in an effort to establish self regulation on all non-news channels. BCCC come into effect from the first week of June, this year. During every show that is provided to Indian households, a scroll appears below which urges the audiences to complain if they find the content shown in the program objectionable.
Gauri breaking Anandi-Jagya’s love lifeColors’ Balika Vadhu is a daily that deals with the sensitive issue of child marriage. And its protagonists Anandi and Jagya got married in their childhood. But they were separated for a few years, so that they can live together after attaining the legal age of marriage. But when that happened, Jagya went to the city for his medical studies. There he fell in love with his classmate Gauri. Incidentally, Gauri is the same girl, whom Jagya aka Jagat had got married in his childhood, on his grandmother, Dadisa’s insistence, thus making Gauri Jagat’s second wife. Jagat’s infidelity came as a shocker to the ardent fans of the daily.
