Farah Khan's cookery show is a 'spicy' affair

Farah Khan

Never trust a thin chef. Probably that's what got the well-rounded Farah Khan, a self-confessed food lover, to Farah Ki Dawat (Colors). We are a country that's obsessed with Bollywood and fancy food. And what better way to cash in on this crazy than to merge the two for an entertaining, yet endearing show.

The weekly series, which launched last week, had Abhishek Bachchan as the first celeb chef. Like a true professional, he added the salt right at the end...that little touch had us appreciate the show a little more than all other cookery shows on air right now.

It's a great concept as the show tries to break the myth that celebs are a privileged lot who don't enter the kitchen and can't differentiate between salt and sugar. Junior B's recipe looked delicious and the way he got down to the nitty-gritty of the cooking made for a nice watch. We are sure that it would make his fans and other men watching the show 'share the load' with their wives and partners. After all, just like laundry, cooking isn't the domain of the women alone. If it takes a celebrity to drive home this point, so be it.

What really works in the favour of the show is the easy chemistry Farah shares with her guests. Just like Karan Johar, the queen Khan knows which buttons to press and how to make a show funny and entertaining. The episodes are peppered with anecdotes from stars' lives that will satisfy anybody who has a big appetite for Bollywood gossip. The way Khan gets her hands dirty with her celebs and looks comfortable in the kitchen, like she owns it, could very well be the selling point of the show. All said and done, she is a hit director who makes big bucks at the box office...if she can whip up a mean dish and not look ruffled in the process, others like us wouldn't mind giving cooking a shot.

But we hope that the show maintains its freshness and novelty, and does not become a platform for blatant promotion of upcoming movies.

Stars should come, cook, indulge in a fun face-off with a guest, and bid adieu, leaving us with fond memories and anecdotes. A big NO to useless drama, movie promotions, and useless banter. The format is rather informal, fun, and house-like. It's like the show could have been shot in our own homes, in our kitchens. It should stay that way.

If you like Bollywood and cooking, this is one of the best shows on the small screen right now. Have you watched the first episode yet? Did you like it? Do let us know your thoughts in the comment section below...
