Ace Director Sarthak Dasgupta
Sarthak Dasgupta left his MBA job years back, in order to pursue his dream career as ‘Writer and Director’. And today, with years of experience behind him, the man stands tall after being awarded with the ‘Sundance Mahindra Global Filmmaker Award’, which is usually given to four Global Film Directors with World-Cinema sensibilities. Sarthak bagged the award this year (2013) along with a Brazilian, Italian and a British Director. The ace Director got the award for his first feature film, The Great Indian Butterfly (TGIB) which happened to be his debut work as a Writer and Director. Talking about the achievement, Sarthak told Tellychakkar.com, “It was an overwhelming experience to be chosen for the Sundance Mahindra Global Filmmaker Award. The award includes a cash prize of $10, 000 which was given at a private ceremony in Utah during the Sundance Film Festival held in January (2013). The award also won me fellowship to the coveted Sundance Screenwriting Lab which happened in India in March. Each selected script gets mentored by 5 top-notch International award-winning screenplay writers under the watchful guidance of the Sundance Institute's core team and their Indian Counterpart, Mumbai Mantra.” The man has had an immense contribution in television too. After being the Fiction Head in Trilogy Krikos who launched Hitler Didi on Zee TV, Sarthak went on to write for Uttaran (FilmFarm). He has also served as the Script Head for 4 Lions Films’ weekend thriller show for Star Plus, Arjun. He has also been the Writer for the TV arm of UTV on Saubhagyavati Bhava for Life OK. Presently, the man is the Creative Director for Contiloe Telefilms’ successful court room thriller, Adaalat for Sony TV. Sarthak averred, “I am also happy contributing to Indian television by means of either writing or working as a creative director. I have a slate of films which I have been working on. Gradually I will begin to roll them into production one by one. I intend to not only direct the films, but also produce them so that they can be correctly distributed globally. My movies are very Indian in nature but at the same time universally topical so as to work even in foreign markets.” Sarthak’s first film to be produced under his banner ‘White Lotus Films’ will be ‘The Music Teacher’ which is a Sundance Institute supported Bengali Feature project, which will first go though the Sundance Script lab in March 2013, post which he will proceed towards production. We congratulate Sarthak on this great achievement!!!
