KOLKATA: Actress Roshni Bhattacharya says that initially she was skeptical about playing the role of an acid attack survivor in the upcoming Bengali soap Aloy Bhubon Bhora.

The show Aloy Bhubon Bhora, which will be aired on Colors Bangla, will feature Roshni in the role of Shruti, an aspiring singer who falls prey to the unchecked heinous act of an acid attack.

At a recent press conference of the show here in Kolkata, the actress said to media, “I am a student of Mass Communication and Videography so while studying the subject I had to watch a lot of such documentaries and at that time I used to think that if I ever get a chance to portray such a role I will surely go ahead.”

“But when I was offered this role, I was skeptical. I was not sure whether I will be able to pull of the character or not. I gave my nod only when I was convinced. Also, I thought as an actor I must accept such challenges,” added the actress who did her graduation from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata.   

As Roshni’s character’s one side of the face has been damaged due to the acid attack, Roshni is required to put on prosthetic makeup. Her mother was little worried about this special make-up.

“My parents saw this look during the look set and my mother was little scared. She asked will I be able to do this and what if something happens to my skin. I told her that if I have to develop as an actress, I have to take this risk. Now they are very supportive,” said the actress.

When specially asked by TellyChakkar about the challenges of such make-up, she said, “It takes around one to one and a half hours to get the make-up right. Also, depending on the skin condition etc., it doesn’t stay the same but then we have to match the continuity. For around 12-13 hours I stay like this. I cannot move one side of my face properly. I drink water via a straw. It’s difficult but as an actor I have taken this as a challenge. I am trying to do my best.”

When she is home how much the character stays back with her; is it easy to switch off from the role, we further asked. “It is actually not easy. The problem of such roles is that you are not part of it, you are not a victim yourself so you have to think about it again and again. While doing that somehow the character stays with you. After reaching home, until and unless, I see my father and mother I do not feel comfortable,” she said. 

The actress signed off saying that many acid attack survivors have recovered and many of them are now social activists. She takes inspiration from all of them and urges people to support and stand by them.
