Jhumma Mitra who is currently playing a Bengali housewife Durga Chatur on SAB TV’s Jeannie Aur Juju (Rajiv Mehra) is having a great time playing this lovable character. Most importantly, she is thoroughly enjoying essaying a Bengali character as she hails from the same community in real life. “I am glad that I am living a Bengali character to the T in this serial.” We feel that Jhumma and her co-star Ashiesh Roy who plays her onscreen husband Mr. Chatur speak Hindi with a Bengali accent on the show which leads to typecasting the community. The actress refutes that, “I do not think that we speak with a bad accent. Also if somewhat of a Bengali accent is there, it is just because most Bengalees speak Hindi in that way. As this is a comedy that typical accent adds a laughter quotient. If this makes the viewers like Durga all the more, I will not mind at all to play the most loved Bengali character on Indian television.” The fantasy genre is growing all the more popular on Indian television of late. What is the actress’s take on that? “Fantasy has a broad reach and appeals to viewers of all ages including kids. I do not think that it is very conducive for them to watch saas bahu soaps involving family politics, vamps and villains along with their mothers. The romantic angle of the series draws in adult viewers too. This is a romance that kids can watch with their parents. In fact it is aptly timed at 9.30pm when families including kids may be having dinner.” She is full of praise for her co-star Ashiesh who is a veteran actor. “He is a great actor, has fabulous comic timing and as he is a Bengali like me, we have many discussions on regarding how we should use Bengali terms and proverbs in the series.” In future the actress is open to doing all kinds of roles including negative roles. She laughs, “I wouldn’t always like the viewers to love me. I would also like to do a b****y role which would make people hate me.”
