Review of Life OK's Kaisa Ye Ishq...Ajab Sa Risk Hai

Gaurav S Bajaj and Sukirti Kandpal
TV soaps shot on foreign shores, an NRI returns to India, a traditional patriarchal household, the exchange of traditional and modern values and last but not the least, family drama- all of them have been dealt with before on Indian television. It is being shown all over again in Life OK’s Kaisa Ye Ishq...Ajab Sa Risk Hai (Producer Manish Goswami). All of this has been formatted into a romantic comedy in an attempt to bring back the flavour of Geet - Hui Sabse Parayi and Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani. The show doesn’t stand apart in its novelty factor. Besides it is somewhat similar to the concept of Sahara One’s current serial Ghar Aaja Pardesi in which the new fangled Roo returns to India against the wishes of her father. Roo’s (Pooja Banerjee) mother is no more, just like Simran’s (Sukirti Kandpal) mother in Kaisa Ye Ishq….Ajab Sa Risk Hai is deceased. In both the shows the NRI protagonist will teach the traditional folks modern values whereas she will get to know more about her homeland. We can’t quite say as to who thought of the concept first, despite the fact that Ghar Aaja Pardesi went on air first. It may be sheer coincidence too that both the shows have a similar story. The delineation of both the shows is however different. Judging from the first episode, we may however say that Ghar Aaja Pardesi is more artistic in its execution and the pulse of the holy city of Varanasi been captured beautifully. Kaisa Ye Ishq… is also capturing the Haryani culture well especially the dialect and costumes which in a way reminds us of Na Aana Is Des Laado. Nevertheless, it can depict rural Haryana even better. Analysing its genre which is that of a romantic comedy, as far as the comic factor is concerned a hot tempered Simran smashing crockery, her father feigning to be nursing multiple fractures, boxer Chacha interacting with his wife in the privacy of his bedroom, Daadu and Daadi sharing a light moment are amusing but aren’t rib tickling humour. Regarding the romance factor, which we are yet to see on the soap, the creatives have a lot of scope in making an endearing love story. It is to be seen as how the story will unfold. As far as the clash between modern and traditional values are concerned, this is a plot which attracts many viewers from India as our country is also divided into the traditional and modern India. Many Indians seek for an ‘ideal’ blend between traditional and modern values which this show is attempting. As far as performances are concerned, especially Gaurav S Bajaj who plays Rajveer, Sunil Kumar Singh who plays Tau, Aron Baali who plays Dadaji and Swalantre Bhanot who plays Baldev Singh (Boxer Chacha) have performed especially well. The dialogues are fairly good, especially the lines with humorous overtones. The cinematography is like any other soap. The art director has done a satisfactory job while working on the interiors of the rural Haryani haveli and plush Singaporean apartment. Keeping in mind that the show is about an affluent Haryani family, the costumes are also credible as per soap standards. To sum up, Kaisa Ye Ishq….Ajab Sa Risk Hai could have been more innovative. It has started off on an average note.
