"I'd rather not do any work than do bad roles"

She marked her entry in Hindi television playing Nisha in Kaahin Kissii Roz. She was noticed by quite a few; yet she refused a role offered next by Balaji telefilms! On the occasion of International Women's Day, Sapana Patil spoke to the lady who had the strength and the will to stand by her convictions - Gauri Tonk, who turned down the queen of soaps, preferring to wait in the wings till life offers her a role of substance.

Why aren't we seeing you on screen these days?

I didn't get good roles that could give me satisfaction and happiness.

What is your definition of satisfaction?

The character that I play should give me the opportunity to showcase my talents. It should bring out the best in me. I am not saying that I always want to play the lead. But whatever the role offered to me, it should have the potential to be performed well.

Were you not happy with your role in 'Kaahin Kissi Roz'?
I was not comfortable wearing expensive saris and sitting at dining tables. I don't know what makes other actors do such roles. I feel they are not being sincere to their profession.

What is it that bothers you in this industry?
I know actors who say they took up roles because the money was good. But I'd rather not do any work than do bad work.

But at least 'Kaahin Kissi Roz' revolved around five to six people, unlike other serials.
Yes, it did. But I felt like I was a filler, just making up the space meant for extra characters.

Didn't you feel like quitting 'Kaahin Kissi Roz' midway?
I did. But I wanted to be professional. i didn't want the shooting schedule to be affected.

Do you regret being a part of 'Kaahin Kissii Roz'?
Professionally, yes. Because it did not help me to grow. But personally, no. (laughs) I found my dear husband, Yash Tonk, on the sets of Kaahin Kissi Roz.

Did Ekta offer you roles after that?
Yes, she did. But I didn't like them. We arrived at a mutual decision and decided not to go ahead. But we are still very much on amicable terms.

What are you occupied with now?
My baby and advertisement assignments!

And what are your future plans?
I will do serials only if I am offered strong roles.
