The
myth surrounding the original Valentine
is a legend.
In
the third century, Roman Emperor
Claudius II was of the firm opinion
that his soldiers would be most
efficient if they were young and
single men who weren't tied-up in
familial relationships.
To
achieve this for his army, Claudius
banned marriage for men at their
fighting prime. Bishop Valentine
purportedly felt it was unjust and
took it upon himself to unite young
lovers secretly. When Claudius found
out, he sentenced Valentine to death
and had him incarcerated.
The story goes that Valentine is
said to have fallen in love with
the jailer's daughter, who used
to visit him frequently in his captivity.
He confirmed his love in his last
letter to her before his execution
and signed it, "From your Valentine."
Today, lovers celebrate it all round
the world. They exchange cards,
gifts, flowers, and promises. They
take it as an occasion to declare
their love for each other. They
take it a step further and other
relationships like sibling, parental
and friendship are included. These
celebrations have immortalized the
saint of love.
With Valentine's day round the corner,
we quiz some of our stars to figure
out how they celebrate this day
and most importantly how well or
ill informed they are, about this
simple story behind the day.

Prachi Desai
: During my school days, we
gifted roses to our best friends
but presently, my work is my Valentine
since I will be shooting for my
serial Kasamh Se.
I can't remember the exact significance
of this occasion but I remember
my Principal narrating something
like a man who was in love with
a girl. And I believe, it's not
about just lovers but it also celebrates
the feelings between parents and
children, siblings and friends.
Simple Kaul
: I
make it a point to party with friends
on Valentine's Day. We don't believe
in exchanging gifts but just freak
out and have fun.
But,
honestly, I do not know how it originated
or its implication. What's is it?
Ganesh
Venkatraman : I do believe in
expressing one's love towards kith
and kin but I don't need a special
day to convey my feelings for my
dear ones. And I also hold that
it is not essentially about giving
gifts but putting forth your caring
thoughts beautifully. I will be
working on 14th and from that angle
I don't have a Valentine.
I
know the origin of this day - the
king of Rome banned soldiers from
marrying and a certain Saint Valentine
secretly helped them unite. His
birthday is celebrated as Valentine's
Day.
Munisha Khatwani : I do not
have any Valentine in particular
but I celebrate it every year with
any of my many friends.
I believe the angel Cupid hit the
dart on two famous mythological
people, arousing love for each other.
It has to do with a Saint (emphasizes)…it's
Saint Valentine. Hence this day
is celebrated as St.Valentine's
Day.
Rakesh
Paul : It's so ridiculous to
express your love on that one day.
I express my love to my mother,
father, brother, wife and others
whenever I meet them. I don't believe
in this Mother's Day, Father's Day,
etc. they are all commercial love.
It's just a reason for creating
hype and a money-making racket.
But just to please my wife Sunaina,
who is flying on 14th, I end up
taking her out for dinner on the
night before she flies and also
another celebration after she comes
back.
According
to me, this is the day when people
observe the birthday of St.Valentine
who was spreading love.
Kamya Punjabi : No,
never. I don't believe in all this
crap. I celebrate whenever I wish
to, why wait for Februaruy 14th.
The story revolving around it? I
don't even want to know about it!
