The Namesake

About the movie: Spanning two generations, The Namesake examines clashing cultures and two very different ways of life. On the heels of their arranged marriage, Ashoke (Khan) and Ashima (Tabu) jet off from Kolkata to their new life in New York. Virtual strangers, their relationship quickly takes a turn when Ashima gives birth to a son. Named Gogol, after the famous Russian author, the child grows up struggling with his identity. As a first-generation American teenager, Gogol (Penn) is torn between his Bengali roots and his American birthright. As Gogol attempts to find his own identity, he rejects his given name, begins dating a rich American girl (Jacinda Barrett), heads to study architecture at Yale and denies his parents’ Bengali traditions. But as much as he tries, Gogol can’t escape his heritage. In the end, Gogol begins to see the links between the world his parents left behind and the new world that lies in front of him.
