Should sledging be banned in cricket?

Post the Harbhajan Singh 'maa ki' controversy the war of words has escalated again with Aussie opener Mathew Hayden labelling Harbhajan Singh an 'obnoxious weed.'

Isn't cricket a gentleman's game and shouldn't it remain one? In that aspect should sledging is banned? Tellychakkar caught up with some Tellywood cricket buffs for their take on it.

Sayantani Ghosh: I think sledging should be banned. It's fair to say that this is a very competitive sport and at times tempers do flare up but everything should be done within limits. However, what I'm thoroughly against is the use of abusive language. That is simply against the spirit of the game.

Karan Grover: No, I don't think sledging should be banned. On the contrary, it should be encouraged. Banning it would mean taking away the fun element from the game. After all, it's requires great skill to disrupt the psyche of your opponent. Besides, I don't think anyone plans it. At that level, the pressure and the emotions run real high and so one is bound to utter a few words in the heat of the moment.

Waqar Shaikh:
Sledging needs to be banned. Cricket is a game and it should be played as one. I'm not saying that you need to make friends out there in the middle but resorting to sledging or abuses is against the ethics of the sport.

Aastha Choudhary:
Of course sledging should be banned. After all, it's really bad. Plus, one must remember that the game is watched by the entire family and such duels don't make for great viewing.

Manav Gohil:
Sledging is a part and parcel of the game. However, care must be taken that one doesn't cross the line of decency.

Sharad Malhotra: There's two ways to look at it. Sledging in a positive manner and if it's for the betterment of the game then it shouldn't be banned. However, it shouldn't send wrong vibes. In this regard, I think it should be banned. Every sport has its code of conduct which should be strictly followed. Is sledging is violation of it, and then it should be stopped.
