Bollywood to Tellywood: Dead end!
Cinestars who failed to make it big on the small screen

Reams of newsprint and mega bytes of server space have been spent in describing how successful television actors have tried their luck on the big screen and failed. But very few articles have been written on cinestars who tried their hand at television and haven't come out triumphant.

While it may sound odd, but there are quite a few film stars who tried to venture into the world of television and didn't reap any success. Well, some did meet with initial success but have failed to carry the momentum.

Let's delve into the TV careers of some of our esteemed celebs from Bollywood.

Madhuri Dixit-Nene:

This Bollywood diva used to have the world at her feet. Unfortunately, she could not repeat her success on the small screen with her reality show Kahin Na Kahin Koi Hai. The show which saw Mrs Nene playing matchmaker flopped big time and put paid to her hopes of being a successful TV star. She perhaps, left the television studios with a vow to never come back again!.

Manisha Koirala:

If there ever is an award for the biggest talent going waste in Indian cinema, Manisha Koirala will definitely be a top contender. She tried her luck in television by hosting a poor cousin of KBC - Sawaal Dus Crore Ka. The show, jointly hosted by Manisha and Anupam Kher, did not get theTRPs to survive even in its initial run. Her agony was compounded with rumours of a strained relationship with co-host Kher.

Sridevi:

Sridevi faced the camera after a decade long sabbatical. And, she chose the idiot box as a comeback tool. She stuck to her roots by playing the south Indian damsel Malini Iyer. Here, she's married in a Punjabi household and is trying to submerge herself into the new culture. However, the viewers weren't quite amused and Malini Iyer was consigned to history. Miss Hawa Hawaii also did not pursue her tele career any further.

Hema Malini:

The dream girl of the Hindi film industry started her television career with the smashing hit Nupur. The show portrayed the journey of dancers and Hema's struggle to become one. It became a big hit, but unfortunately, when she tried to repeat her success story with a double role in Ravi Chopra's Kamini Damini it did not quite work. Despite a big production house and good cast, the show bombed. The Dream girl didn't have dream debut as a reality show judge with Colors show Dancing Queen failing miserably. Rumour has it that a lot of people weren't happy with her judging skills.

Karishma Kapoor:

Lolo's television stint started with Karishma - A Miracle Of Destiny. Unfortunately, there were no miracles as far as the outcome of the show was concerned. What made matters worse was that this show got embroiled in a legal wrangle when it faced allegations of plagiarism. The show wasn't too last much thereafter. Lolo did return to TV as a judge on Nach Baliye 4 but the show didn't live up to its hype.

Manoj Bajpayee:

Kam Ya Zyaada marked Manoj Bajpai's foray into television. A lot of interactivity was brought into the show by offering half of the prize money to viewers sitting at home, but despite that the show did not really ring a bell with the viewers. Grapevine has it that the show was offered to SRK earlier. Well, that's bad luck for Manoj considering that whatever offer SRK has rejected, it's turned out to be a huge gain for the second choice candidate.

Johnny Lever:

The actor launched his comedy show Johnny Ala Re amidst much fanfare. Though he came, Johnny failed to conquer. Despite a good beginning, Johnny Ala Re sank without a trace. It didn't help that Lever repeated most of his yesteryear jokes.

Sushmita Sen:

The sensational actress tried her luck in television with Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena on Colors. The show had everything in favour of it - two good looking hosts (Sush and Wasim Akram), a retinue of popular cricketers as participants and a good theme. But it didn't amuse the viewers much and never got the numbers which was expected of it. The former Miss Universe wanted to produce a biopic on Ranilaxmi bai but Sen shelved the idea after the concept was poached by a competitor. As of now one doesn't know whether Sushmita will produce content for television.
