I enjoy spending – Yash Tonk

Money. That's what drives everyone in the final analysis, whether in the glamour world of acting or the hard grind of scripting and producing. Cashin' In sits down with TV celebs to know well they handle their financial matters, and tracks their spending patterns.

How important is money for you?

Money is very important, but only to the extent that it can purchase the necessary comforts for you and your family. But although money is important, I am not obsessed with it.

What is your attitude towards money?

There can be two attitudes towards money; one can be that of saving every paisa and the other can be that of spending without a care. I am not a miser; I enjoy spending. I have inherited this from my father, who never really believed in being too careful about money. Yet, he was never really stuck for lack of money when there was a need. It is the same for me.

Who handles your expenses?

My wife Gauri takes care of daily expenses and ensures that I don't spend too much. As for investments, my Chartered Accountant (CA) takes care of them.

Are you an impulsive shopper?

Yes. I am a very impulsive buyer. I go for shopping once a month and I usually blow my credit limit. I love buying clothes and cannot be careful when shopping. I am also a reckless buyer of sunglasses and leather jackets. I cannot resist them! Whenever I am on outdoor shoots, I spend whatever I carry as well as whatever might be in the bank. And after that, I am forced to remain in my room and watch TV.

What is your most expensive purchase?

That has got to be my duplex apartment in Goregaon. We'll be moving in there sometime in the first week of April.

What are the investments you have made?

Whatever my CA has recommended; actually, my wife would be more capable of answering this question. She looks into this personally.

How much money do you carry every day?

I carry my credit card and around Rs. 1,000 cash. My wife makes sure that there is a limited amount of cash in my wallet.

What was your first salary? What did you do with it?

My first salary was Rs. 6,500 for a music video that I did with Ken Ghosh. I don't really remember how I spent that money, but I do remember that those were my initial days in Mumbai and I was enjoying life to the hilt. I must have had a lavish lunch or dinner.

What is your advice for investors?

(Smiling) Do you really want my advice on investments? On a serious note, follow your instincts and invest only in what you are comfortable with – whatever it may be. When you are unsure, listen to people you trust.
