A film about the Shah Bano case has been announced by Supran S. Varma. He has also revealed plans to produce a trilogy of courtroom dramas. For those who are unaware, Shah Bano was the first woman to successfully battle for alimony in court and obtain a historic ruling, which altered the foundations of Indian society.

A director who has won a national award will be brought in to oversee the work in the interim. In 1978, the husband of Indore, Madhya Pradesh-born Shah Bano Begum filed for divorce. She successfully sued her husband for criminal charges in the Supreme Court, obtaining the right to receive alimony from him.

However, some Muslim politicians launched a campaign to get the ruling overturned in response to criticism of the decision. A few Muslim scholars used the Qur'an to demonstrate how the ruling went against Islamic law. The extent to which different religions in India had different civil codes was the subject of dispute.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act, 1986 was passed by the then-whole majority Congress government, undermining the Supreme Court's ruling by limiting Muslim divorcees' access to alimony from their former spouses for a mere ninety days following the divorce.
