MUMBAI: Bollywood movies are known for the masala film genre, which is a mixture of action, comedy, romance, drama and melodrama along with musical numbers, but there is a shortage of films in the spy genre. Over the years, there have been a few like Baby, Tiger Zinda Hai, Raazi, War, Ankhen, and a few more. Though, this will change with the avalanche of spy films scheduled to release between now and the upcoming year. Here is the list of upcoming spy thrillers to be excited about.

Pathaan

Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan is hands down the most anticipated Hindi movie. It is the 4th film in the same spy universe as YRF’s Tiger and War and will be released in theatres next January. The film also stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham and is set to be the most expensive YRF project.

Tiger 3

Salman Khan’s Tiger 3 will follow quickly on the heels of Pathaan. It is being directed by Maneesh Sharma and will also star Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan in their previous roles. One could safely say that it’s the biggest spy franchise in Indian cinema to date.

Tehran

John Abraham has already proved his mettle in the spy franchise with Parmanu and Romeo Akbar Walter. Tehran will also feature Manushi Chhillar and is said to be inspired by true events.

Khufiya

Tabu reunites with her Maqbool Director, Vishal Bharadwaj, for the neo-noir spy film Khufiya. It also stars Ali Fazal, Wamiqa Gabbi and Ashish Vidyarthi. The film is based on Amar Bhushan's espionage novel, Escape to Nowhere.

Blur

Taapsee Pannu is supposed to be bankrolling a spy film called Blur from her own production house. It will be directed by Ajay Bahl and will also feature Gulshan Devaiah opposite her.

Mission Majnu

Sidharth Malhotra will be playing the lead in Mission Majnu, directed by Shantanu Bagchi and apparently is based on one of India’s greatest covert operations. Rashmika Mandanna plays the female lead.
