MUMBAI: For those who thought the Met Gala had become predictable, this year's edition, held on its traditional first Monday in May, delivered fresh surprises, thanks to Anna Wintour’s impeccable curation. The 2024 gala welcomed a diverse mix of first-time guests, including A-list athletes, Bollywood stars, and members of The White Lotus Season 3 cast, shaking up the usual roster of red carpet regulars.

The dress code, “Tailored for You,” aligned with the Costume Institute’s current exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, which delves into the history of Black fashion and dandyism from the 19th century to today. This theme inspired a range of sleek suiting and personal interpretations that highlighted individuality through impeccable tailoring and statement accessories.

Among the standout male attendees, Shah Rukh Khan stole the spotlight. Known as "King Khan" for his legendary status in Bollywood with over 100 films to his name, he made history as the first male Bollywood actor to attend the Met Gala. Dressed in Sabyasachi, his ensemble featured a striking walking stick adorned with an 18-karat gold Bengal tiger. His appearance generated $19 million in Media Impact Value (MIV), placing him at the top of the men’s list.

Punjabi actor, singer, and producer Diljit Dosanjh secured the third spot among male celebrities at the Met Gala, donning a regal Prabal Gurung ensemble inspired by traditional Sikh royal attire. His presence generated an impressive $7.3 million in Media Impact Value (MIV). The remaining top five male appearances included standout looks from Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo, and Bad Bunny, who opted for a Prada outfit.

Collectively, the top five male stars brought in $48.6 million in MIV. However, this was significantly overshadowed by the women attendees, whose red carpet appearances garnered a combined MIV of $86.2 million—nearly double that of their male counterparts. Despite the event's focus on dandyism and tailored menswear, it’s clear that women continue to command the lion’s share of attention and engagement at fashion’s biggest night.
