B-towners often generate enough fodder for controversy to keep media and mango people interested and this year was no different. From cleavage issues to protest against nudity, we take a look at the multiple controversies that rocked Bollywood this year.

Deepika Padukone

Deepika's cleavage made more news than her films this year. When Times of India's (TOI) online edition did an eye-grabbing albeit regular news item on Deepika's exposed cleavage, the actress took deep umbrage over the needless objectification of her private body parts. In a tweet addressed to TOI, Deepika blasted the leading media giant for indulging in cheap journalistic tactics. Her Bollywood cronies too followed suit and supported her to the hilt drawing the ire of TOI who responded in kind silencing all third parties in the matter.

Current Status: Deepika is yet to be featured in Bombay Times after the battle over cleavage.

Shweta Basu Prasad

This was a case of things going wrong due to an apparent media overdrive. The nation stood shell shocked when Shweta Basu best known for her role as a child artist in Makdee was arrested for prostitution in Hyderabad. Soon cops circulated a statement purporting to be Shweta's which said that she was broke and had taken up prostitution to support her family. Eventually, it turned out that Shweta never wrote this statement and neither was she involved in prostitution at any point. The court acquitted her and reprimanded the overzealous cops. The actress explained her anguish at being unfairly targeted by the media in an open letter.

Current Status: Shweta is currently working with Anurag Kashyap and also has Hansal Mehta's movie in her kitty.

Anushka Sharma's lip job

Lips don't lie baby! When Anushka started sporting extremely fuller lips at the start of the year, rumours about she having gone under the knife started flying in thick and fast. An irate Anushka then issued a clarification via Twitter stating that the enhancement happened due to a lip balm and was for her role in Bombay Velvet.

Current Status: Anushka's lips are back to normal and Virat would be happy we believe!

Anushka Sharma & Virat Kohli in England

Anushka courted even bigger controversy when she made an appearance at India's tour of England and also stayed in with Virat Kohli. A major brouhaha unfolded following which Indian cricket team's manager issued a statement saying the BCCI allowed the couple to stay together as they were planning to get married soon. Oops! BCCI's statement had Anushka hopping mad and the actress issued a blanket declaration stating there is no marriage on cards with anyone soon.

Current Status: We don't know about marriage but Virat and Anushka are definitely together

Salman Khan & Photographers

Enfant terrible Salman Khan rubbed the paparazzi the wrong way at a promotional event of Kick where after a scuffle between lensmen and Salman's bodyguards, the actor chose to take the latter's side. Salman even asked the photographers to get their act together and gave them a piece of his mind by asking them to leave if they wanted to. Peeved at this not so 'Being Human' behaviour, photographers unanimously decided to boycott Salman Khan. Salman too stood steadfast in his decision to not apologise for his unruly attitude. The impasse between the two continued till Arpita's wedding.

Current Status: All is well now. Salman apparently met all photographers before Arpita's wedding and asked them to let bygones be bygones. Photographers relented and everyone went trigger happy.

Bollywood and Saifai Mahotsav

Several Bollywood stars including Salman and Madhuri were paid crores of rupees to perform at UP CM's Saifai Mahotsav. The stars faced severe backlash because the event was organised while riot victims in UP languished in despicable conditions. Mahesh Bhatt apologised for sending his daughter Alia to dance while Salman said there was nothing wrong about entertaining people and the money received by him was used for the benefit of people.

Current Status: Bollywood learnt its lesson and perhaps would be careful in future.

Aamir nude PK standee - Aamir shed his inhibitions and with it his clothes as well. With just a transistor covering his manhood, Aamir made a controversial appearance on PK's first poster. Certain mild protests happened sporadically but the major moral thugs chose to give this one a miss.

Current Status: The move generated great publicity for PK

Modi & Bollywood

For the first time ever, an apolitical Bollywood took sides during elections. One hand, we had Salman Salman Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Paresh Rawal, Shatrughan Sinha, Hema Malini and a host of other biggies rooting for Modi while on the other, those against him jumped on Arvind Kejriwal's bandwagon. Ultimately, Modi decimated his opponents thereby sending all his detractors to oblivion. 

End Result: Modi’s Bollywood devotees were rewarded with powerful seats in his government.

Jaya Bachchan and Happy New Year: At a literature festival, Jaya Bachchan termed her son, Abhishek Bachchan’s film as nonsensical. The freak comment threatened to show Jaya in bad light until Bachchans rallied around her and downplayed her comment. “It was taken and blown out of context,” said everyone. Jaya meanwhile breathed easy after SRK didn’t bother much about her comment.

Current Status: All is well between SRK and Bachchans.

Sanjay Dutt's parole – Sanjay Dutt got in and out of Yerwada Central Prison as and when he wanted to. Parole rules were flouted multiple times allowing the jailed actor to pay a flying visit to his family and friends in Mumbai. His last parole created so much uproar that the actor has had to lie low for quite a while now.

End Result: Last heard, he had applied for parole to be at home during New Year however it has yet not been granted.
