RIP: Deaths in Bollywood, 2014

Normally funerals in Bollywood are a starry affair only if concerns a superstar or his family. Else, showbiz is so cruel that less successful actors die a lonely death with not many from B-town even wanting to offer their condolences. No star death happened this year and out of the many who passed away, a lot of them were low-profile entities. We list out the names of those celebs all of whom ascended high heaven, this year.

Ravi Chopra – The only death this year that brought the industry together. Ravi Chopra, son of legendary B.R Chopra and best known for providing independent India its first wholesome family entertainment through Mahabharata, passed away in November after a prolonged lung ailment and other medical complications. The filmmaker’s soft spoken nature in his heydays had endeared him to one and all so much so that his death came as a great shock to all industrywallahs. All the leading titans of Bollywood including Aditya Chopra attended Ravi’s funeral and deeply mourned the demise of this good-hearted filmmaker.

Sadashiv Amrapurkar – Best known for his eunuch act in Sadak, Sadashiv Amrapurkar faded away from the arclights as roles in Bollywood started dimming. The veteran actor was taken seriously ill and admitted to a multi-specialty hospital for lung complications. Unfortunately, Sadashiv didn’t survive long enough. Quite a few Bollywood celebs including Amitabh Bachchan took to Twitter to express their condolences.

Zohra Sehgal – The fragrance of her beauty lingers on even after her death. That’s Zohara Sehgal for you. This legendary actress, known for her exquisite beauty, is one of those rare actors who has worked with all four generations of Bollywood stars. Zohra lived life to the fullest and died due to cardiac arrest at the ripe old age of 102.

Suchitra Sen – The very feminine and beautiful Suchitra Sen was a rage not just in Bengal but also in Bollywood. From becoming to the first actress to win an award at an international film festival in 1963 to shunning Dadasaheb Phalke award, Suchitra has seen both highs and lows in her film career. In 1979, she decided to shun public life and all forms of public contact for which she earned the moniker, Greta Garbo. Suchitra’s legacy lives on through her daughter Moon Moon Sen and granddaughters, Riya and Raima Sen. The actress died in January this year due to a heart attack.

K Balachander – The man who launched Kamal Haasan is unfortunately no more. The legendary Balachander passed away yesterday due to age-related illness. Balachander is credited for having launched a plethora of South Indian actors including superstar Rajinikanth, Prakash Raj, Sujatha and Saritha.

Medha Jalota – This was one tragic tale that made everyone weep. Medha and Bhajan Samrat Anup Jalota found love in each other’s arms after previously failed marriages. Unfortunately, in a cruel twist of fate, Medha was soon diagnosed with a hole in heart and Anup’s world came down crashing. However, like a true lover, Anup heroically stood behind Medha like a Rock of Gibralter holding her hand in tough times. Unfortunately, after a long battle, Medha finally bid adieu to the mortal world in USA where she was undergoing medical treatment.

Sudhir – Yesteryear villain, Bhagwandas Mulchand Luthria aka Sudhir died a lonely death. A complete recluse by nature, no one knew anything about his whereabouts until news of his death started circulating. The actor is believed to have passed away due to a lung ailment.

Robin Williams – The world wept when Hollywood’s most loved Oscar winning comedian, Robin Williams committed suicide. The man who delighted many in India as Mrs. Doubtfire is believed to have hanged himself with a belt and died from asphyxiation. The world was certainly left a poorer place after Robin’s departure.

Bobby Chawla (Juhi Chawla’s brother) – Ex CEO of SRK’s Red Chillies, Bobby Chawla died after being in coma for four long years. It was in 2010 when tragedy struck in the form of brain hemorrhage while he was dining at a restaurant. Despite rallying around the best medical help from across the globe, Bobby never came out of his comatose state.

Nanda – Yesteryear beauty Nanda best known for her work in Teen Deviyaan and Gumnaam, died earlier this year at the age of 75. The actress who was briefly engaged to hit director Manmohan Desai stayed out of the public eye for long after retiring from films. Her death also came as a shocker for many as the actress was not known to be suffering from any grave illness.
