Sushant Singh Rajput refused this academic degree and pursued acting

Sushant Singh Rajput left Stanford scholarship offer to pursue his dream of becoming an actor in Bollywood and sought inspiration from Shah Rukh Khan in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

MUMBAI: Sushant Singh Rajput left us at the age of 34 today and was found hanging at his Bandra residency. He was no doubt an amazing actor, the actor who started his Bollywood career with the movie Kai Po Che with Rajkumar Rao and Amit Sadh, has garnered a lot of love and appreciation in his first movie itself. And the actor was unstoppable after that, his performances in movies like MS Dhoni, Kedarnath, Sonchiriya, Chhichhore were unmissable.

The actor was offered a scholarship from Stanford University in California, which he refused in order to become an actor. In his 2017 interview with HT Brunch, Sushant Singh Rajput had revealed how the big-eyed from Patna who went on to become an engineer, landed in the tinsel town.

The actor said that, engineering was never his choice. He always wanted to be an astronaut, and later, an Air Force pilot. He remembered tearing up Top Gun poster when his parents told him that was not going to happen. Apparently, he was going to be an engineer. Maybe the drama he did that day should’ve given everyone a clue.

The actor also added that his 3 sisters were too good in their academics so the benchmark was already high for him and only doing well was not the option for him. He admitted that he sought inspiration from Shah Rukh Khan before he pursued his dream of becoming an actor.

The actor said that he is a huge fan of SRK and he remembers watching Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) and thinking now here’s a cool dude. He is a great performer, the actor said but that’s not what impacted him most: Shah Rukh helped me sort out my confusion about who he should be.

The actor said that he was fascinated but at the same time confused too, he didn’t know whether to embrace the West or be loyal to our culture. At this point came DDLJ, he was in Class VI, and Raj showed him that it was cool to have a beer, but then he also waited for Simran’s dad’s approval.

There was a balance. It was the perfect marriage of an aspiring India and an India trying to hold on to its culture that inspired him to become an actor.
