MUMBAI : For the past couple of days, there's been a debate going on, on social media about Tumbbad and Kantara. Anand Gandhi, who is the writer and producer of Tumbbad, tweeted, “Kantara is nothing like Tumbbad. My idea behind Tumbbad was to use horror as an allegory of toxic masculinity and parochialism. Kantara is a celebration of these.”

Now, this tweet led to a debate about whether Kantara is actually about celebrated toxic masculinity and parochialism, and also if Tumbbad was better than the Rishab Shetty directorial. Well, a lot of netizens have been trolling Anand for the same.

We spoke to a few people about the same, and here’s what they have to say…

Anjali: Not sure about Kantara celebrating toxic masculinity, but it has some scenes that are derogatory towards women. Tumbbad on the other hand was an amazing film.

Mayank: Kantara is a Kannada film, and did very well in Hindi, so that’s why now Bollywood filmmakers have problems with it. Tumbbad was a good film, but Kantara is amazing.

Neha: Tumbbad was an excellent film, much better than Kantara. It’s just that nowadays South films are getting praised a lot more, so everyone is loving Kantara.

Rishi: Clearly, Kantara celebrated toxic masculinity, and everyone ignores it by saying that in the South these things are usually shown. So, then one should not complain if it is shown in Bollywood films.

Zaid: Kantara and Tumbbad, both are good films. One should not compare them; don’t know why Anand Gandhi decided to tweet that.
