Sumit Kaul on FSex: "Conversations Should Be About Learning, Not Identity Wars"

MUMBAI: Actor Sumit Kaul, best known for his role as Girgit in Tenali Rama on SAB TV, has always been vocal about engaging in meaningful discussions. Speaking about FSex (The Free Speech Experiment), he emphasized the importance of open conversations, especially in a world where polarization has become the norm.

"I'm really glad that something like FSEX  is happening because we are living in a time where polarization dominates discourse. You can't be a student for life and keep discussions alive," Sumit said, highlighting how modern-day debates often lack the depth of learning and exchange of ideas.

He expressed concern over how discussions have evolved into identity wars rather than platforms for understanding. "If you look at history, the greatest identity wars—especially those based on religious identities—have only ended in violence. But if there has ever been lasting peace, or peace that we can sustain, it has been through conversations," he explained.

Sumit believes that real learning happens when people engage in open conversations without judgment. He praised platforms like FSex for fostering dialogue where individuals, despite their differences, can come together to share their perspectives. "This is one of the few platforms where I feel people are genuinely open to discussions. We may not always see eye to eye, but we are willing to have a graceful and strongly opinionated conversation without judging the other person."

Reflecting on the impact of such discussions, Sumit Kaul hopes that conversations like these will encourage others to move away from aggressive arguments and toward mature, meaningful dialogues. "The beauty of this experiment is that it’s not rehearsed. We are simply bringing ourselves, our experiences, and our learnings to the table—sharing what we know and, in turn, learning from the audience as well."

For Sumit, true conversations are about honesty, growth, and understanding. "The idea was never to script this. It was always about demonstrating that even the strongest opinions can be exchanged in a healthy, respectful, and insightful manner."

Sumit Kaul’s perspective serves as a reminder that dialogue, when approached with openness, has the power to break barriers and foster real change.
