Remakes of our present shows? No way!

Cult shows like Hum Log, Ramayan, Mahabharat are being rehashed. These are shows that were made almost about 20 years ago. I am not going to get into the merits or demerits of the remakes. The point I want to make is whether two decades later would any of our existing shows ever be reborn in a new avatar?
Cult shows like Hum Log, Ramayan, Mahabharat are being rehashed. These are shows that were made almost about 20 years ago. I am not going to get into the merits or demerits of the remakes. The point I want to make is whether two decades later would any of our existing shows ever be reborn in a new avatar? Almost all of us either regularly follow soaps or sometimes just catch snatches of some of them on the popular channels. However much as we may enjoy a show as it unwinds daily before us I don’t think we would want to watch an adaptation of any of the current shows that are on air. Just mull a bit over this: Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii was one of the longest running soaps on Star and watched by millions. How many of those who watched it day in and night out would want to see it remade? For that matter even popular ones like Bairi Piya, Bidaai, Laagi Tujhse Lagan are hardly inspiring enough to be rehashed. And as we mull over this lets cut back to the glorious days of Doordarshan when Hum Log, Buniyaad, Nukkad, Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Udaan ruled the small screen. Now as news spills out that we will soon get to watch an adaptation of Hum Log there is an adrenalin rush. In fact most of us who have watched any of the above mentioned shows would definitely plead that they be remade. In fact even a Season 2 of shows like Karamchand, Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai would be welcome. Sadly, the same cannot be said of any of the current shows. In fact I should not even be drawing a parallel here. How many of these shows have the same depth and quality of the ones mentioned above? Though I do agree that when remakes get made it only means we are running out of fresh ideas. But instead of coming up with sub standard shows I think it’s better to be served some good old wine in a new bottle. And to add to this it will open up a new section of the audience - the younger generation who have yet to sample this. So as I wait for Hum to hit the small screen I only hope I don’t have to eat humble pie and hope that it is half as good if not better than the original. Do write in with your wish list of shows you would like to see in new clothes. Read more...
