It’ just over a year old but Colors has already scaled to the top of the Hindi GEC chart. A lot of this success is attributed to its number one show Balika Vadhu. This tale on the ills of child marriage has captured the attention of one and all. Balika’s contribution can be gauged from the fact no show on Colors (fiction or non fiction) has ever registered a peak TRP of 10. In fact, this was the highest TRP by any fiction show in the last three years. It’s no secret that it took 15 years for writer Purnendu Shekhar to convince a channel to accept such a script. However, it was only Colors who had the courage to back such a concept. Balika Vadhu has now become Colors' pride but the envy of other channels. Well, if rumours are to be believed, one such channel had the first choice but it chose to ignore this Sphere Origins production. An industry insider informs, “Even before Colors was launched, the production house had offered two shows, Balika Vadhu and Dharam Veer, to NDTV Imagine. However, Imagine weren’t optimistic of Balika Vadhu’s chances as they felt a show with children as protagonists wouldn’t work. So, they opted for Dharam Veer. Balika is among the top shows today while Dharam Veer has long gone off air.’ We tried contacting producer Sunjoy Waddhwa and even sent him a text message but he didn’t reply.
