After shooting for six to eight months, I make it a point to travel, relax and learn: Director Rishi Tyagi

Director Rishi Tyagi

Rishi Tyagi is someone who believes in exploring the world around. Therefore when he was offered his first reality show in Life OK’s The Bachelorette India – Mere Khayalon Ki Mallika, he grabbed the opportunity.

This tall-dark-long haired director likes his work and since he comes from the fiction background, reality shows seem to be an easy beat for him.

In a conversation with Tellychakkar.com, Tyagi talks about his journey from films to TV and his passion for travelling.

When did you start your journey in the entertainment industry?

(smiles) Well, I started as an assistant with Mahesh Bhatt and worked with him in 10 to 15 films; with Tamanna being my last project for his banner. From there I moved on to assist Milan Luthria for Kachche Dhage. In 2000, I got into television. In between I worked on Jism and Paa. But majorly, I have been doing TV all this while.

Which was your first show on TV?

(pauses) The first show that I did was Shaurat for DD after which I worked with Balaji Telefilms for about six years. And I must mention this that there is not a better company than Balaji. They do not let you down anywhere at any moment. They give you everything but you have to deliver; not in terms of just quantity but quality too.

The Bachelorette is your first non-fiction project?

(smiles) Yes and I must say that fiction is tougher for me. In a non-fiction show the maximum that you can do is set up everything and then reality takes its own course. In fiction, you got to explain the characters their part on which they act accordingly. There are times when we need content in reality and in such a situation we put them in a tunnel (give them a task). The creative team works on the task part to which the contestants react.

Is it difficult to handle Mallika Sherawat?

Not at all, she has been very co-operative with the timing and that’s why we are on schedule.

What do you bring in as a director of this show?

(pauses) Since I am from the fiction genre, so I have a vision of how things should flow and have your say on what will be the best. There are times when things are accepted while there are times when they aren’t. This is all that I bring on to the show.

Do you reshoot in case of technical glitches?

If there is a technical problem, we go back and ask for a re-take but a moment lost, is a moment lost. This is also why we have a multiple camera set up.

What’s next in the pipeline?

I would like to do a travel show. Though it’s more of a selfish motive but I like observing people from different cultures and also learn from them. Especially travelling in the interiors where there is so much of simplicity; they live life at its own pace. On the personal front I have been doing just that. After shooting for six to eight months I make it a point to travel. Since I love photography too, I always carry a camera with me. Travelling gives a different perspective to your life and a lot of knowledge too.
