Storytelling is always the most important factor for me: Producer Monish Sekhri

Producer Monish Sekhri

We know him as the Producer who gave us one inspiring tale of a little special child Antara in the popular Zee TV show, Aap Ki Antara.

Yes, we are talking about Producer Monish Sekhri, who has given the TV viewing audience shows like Aap Ki Antara and Dhoond Legi Manzil Humein under the banner Drishtant Media.

Now, the man is ready for his second innings on TV, which comes nearly after four years... Though away from the small screen, Monish has been working hard on his movie, tentatively titled “I” Pad for the last two years.

Also, what makes him all the more elated is that he is back on TV exactly at a time when his favourite show, Aap Ki Antara is on air on Zee Zindagi.

In an exclusive conversation with Tellychakkar.com, Monish speaks about his new ventures both for the small as well as big screen, his take on the buzzing business on TV and so on...

Excerpts:

Welcome back, to TV.

Thank you, we had taken a back seat from TV, and were working sincerely on our feature film. Now that the film is ready, our team is back on TV. There are few things brewing, and the effort is to make another series as interesting and honest as Aap Ki Antara.

Tell us about your movie, “I” Pad.

“I” Pad is an entertaining and effortless combination of comedy and drama. It speaks of the true life story of a person by name Arunachalam Muruganathan set in Bhopal. What actually starts off as a small debate with his wife, results in the man inventing a low-cost machine to make cost-effective sanitary pads for women. Basically, “I” Pad is the story of three billion women told by a man. The film has Sudir Nema and Shalini Vats playing the central roles, amidst a huge ensemble cast from the theatre. Like always, I bank on my concept, and look forward to the movie doing well.

The movie has already garnered appreciations. Isn’t it?

Recently, it was selected at the Film Bazaar Work in Progress Lab. We are also looking at featuring it at the Toronto and Venice Film Festivals. Above all, we have the release scheduled in India sometime this October or November. People abroad have appreciated the movie. Now we are waiting for a good feedback in India.

Tell us about your newly formed banner?

Earlier, we used to work under the banner Drishtant Media. Now, all our ventures will be under Lucknow Talkies. As said above, we are looking at entertaining audiences with meaningful and entertaining concepts.

What are plans for the future?

We have quite a few interesting stories lined up for the digital platforms. Very soon, we should roll out the first of our web series. While we await the release of our film, we are working rapidly on newer concepts on TV and should freeze on something in the coming months.

So how do you see the growth in TV? And what about the newer trends that have emerged?

Yes, there is quite a lot of room for experiments in TV these days. There is lot more of openness and less rigidity in terms of broadcasters. There have been shows in patches and pockets that have been really nice. In contradiction to that, lot of loud and over the top content too has been very much prevalent. Having said this, there has definitely been a lot of work on TV, worth taking a look. Shows like Tamanna and Nisha Aur Uske Cousins have definitely created a ray of hope. Series like 24 is seeing its Season Two and that is really impressive. Bade Achhe Laggte Hain as a concept was brilliant when it started. Everest was also good, but lost a hold in terms of execution. So overall, I guess TV will prevail and do well in the coming years. The limited series have made quite a lot of noise in the Indian TV zone, and we will see more of it.

What are you really excited about at the moment?

Well, it has to be about the digital content we are planning at the moment. I plan to tell the kind of stories, I usually do. For me, storytelling is the most important aspect, and I cannot be dishonest to the story.

How do you feel to see your baby Aap Ki Antara on air on Zee Zindagi?

It is indeed a great feeling. I had not kept tab on what’s happening on TV for a long time when I was busy with my movie. So when we got back to TV, I got a call one day and was notified about Zee Zindagi bringing on Aap Ki Antara from 23 May. Aah, it gave me a feeling that I had never left the TV space (smiles). I am right now picking pieces from where I left four years back. It is always nice to see your work on screen again. We are now looking forward to many more interesting projects, both on the digital and TV space.

Here’s wishing you great luck, Monish!!
