The concept of finite series on Indian television is still at a nascent stage: Sunjoy Wadhwa

Producer Sunjoy Wadhwa

Producer Sunjoy Wadhwa has produced many shows like Gulaal, Saat Phere - Saloni Ka Safar, Saraswatichandra, Jyoti, Balika Vadhu and many more. Under his banner Sphere Origins.

Now the talented creator is all kicked with his latest venture on Indian television, Piya Rangrezz on Life OK. Set in a rural backdrop, the show indeed looks promising. Tellychakkar.com caught up with him for a quick chat. Excerpts…

Tell us something about Piya Rangrezz…

Piya Rangrezz is the story of lovers from small town. It's about Sher, who is a rough and rugged man, but falls in love with a girl, who is his opposite. But Sher is not an outright negative character, he has many shades to him. I would like to call him as the anti-hero of my series. The story is about his transformation from being a rough, carefree guy to a mature man in love.

Do you think that the story of anti-heroes or dark themes are on the rise these days?

I believe that dark stories are by nature very catchy, it easily draws our attention. And as far as anti-hero is concerned, no one can be absolutely negative, it’s about dark patches of someone’s life.  It’s just a different genre. May be that is the reason such shows or films are working these days.

Why made you select Gaurav S Bajaj and Kirtida Mistry?

I think both of them posses certain kind of innocence, which was needed for their roles. Gaurav has that rugged feature in him and at the same time he has a soft nature, which makes him an apt choice for this role. As for Kirtida, she is a fresh face, which is definitely a plus point for her.

Social issues have found a voice in your shows many times, so is it a conscious decision?

After reaching a certain point in my career, I believe that we need to do some stories on social causes. And that had to be told in an entertaining way. It’s my thought that we should contribute to the development of the society in whatever way possible and I guess by speaking about such issues I can do my part, and I love doing it.

Recently, your show Balika Vadhu crossed a mile stone making it one of the longest running shows on television, so what is your feeling now?

Honestly speaking, when we started with Balika Vadhu, we never thought that it would become so successful. Even Balika Vadhu is a reason for talking about such issues. After getting all the success, I thought it’s high time that we talked about such issues. The show has been a path-breaking one, it will always remain close to my heart.

Your show Gaanga has been airing on &TV, do you think it is a risk for the makers to launch their show on a new GEC?

Yes, definitely it was a challenge for me and to anybody who wants to do something on a new GEC rather than on an already established one. Initially, even I was scared with the thought that what if it does not work. But thankfully, it not only worked but proved to be a successful one. And I am very happy about that.

Finite series are trending on small screen these days, what is your take on that?

In India, finite series on television are still at a nascent stage. The concept has just started, it needs more time to gain audience’s acceptance. But on the whole, finite series are definitely a positive trend. Personally speaking, I am not planning to make one as of now, but might do it later on.

Sunjoy has some new projects lined up and we wish him all the best for the same.
