Inspiring Tales: TV shows and their 'inspiration' from films

Gone are the days when our beloved Indian audience used to complain about Bollywood films being inspired from international flicks. Nowadays, even our show makers on the small screen believe in drawing inspirations from the big screen.

Yes, haven’t you come across quite a lot of daily soaps adapting to themes and sub plots based on popular Bollywood or Hollywood films?

From the super natural thriller Junoon to the revenge drama Ramleela, all have found a new expression in our favourite television shows. While SOL and Shoonya Square produced Thapki (Colors) is all set to take a cue from the Hollywood flick Home Alone drama, &TV’s show Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum has already shown the tale of the cursed shape shifting tiger (played by Karan Kundra), which is based on the Rahul Roy starrer Junoon.

We wondered what has brought about this scenario in TV today.. And to seek an answer, we spoke to some of the industry people to find out the real reason behind this.

And trust us, we got some really interesting answers and thoughts...

Actor Jigyasa Singh, who plays the titular role in Thapki Pyar Ki believes that the audiences’ demand has led to such trends. “Nowadays, even young people watch television series. And they are not interested in the age old saas-bahu drama. Youth wants to watch something refreshing even in daily dramas. Perhaps that is the reason why writers are incorporating such themes.”

While Jigyasa believes so, writer turned producer Sonali Jaffer has a very different thought on the same. Being a writer herself Sonali commented, “As a creative professional one can get inspired from any literary work or other works, and at times they can feel like integrating that theme into their work with their own perception.”

Echoing a similar thought ace writer Raghuvir Shekhawat continued, “It’s not a fact that the industry writers are lacking in original content. The fact is that certain situations remind us of a different content, which might be inspired as the writer wanted to play with the original theme in his own work, or the writer and the creative might just think on the same line to that of the original content creator. Even during my early days I have been accused of content plagiarism, even when it was something original. At times when we narrate a concept to someone, they opine that they have seen it or heard it before, while I might have not. So, it is not always about getting inspired from another work.”

“I will also mention that this is not a fresh trend to witness similar contents. Earlier as well, we have faced similar situations,” added Raghuvir.

While writers are of this opinion, we find out that &TV’s series Adhuri Kahani Humari has already showcased scenes based on iconic sequences from films like K3G, Ramleela and Ek Thi Daayan.

Moving away a bit from films, Colors’ Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat has also depicted a sequence which had certain similarities with the international television fantasy drama Game of Thrones. When we countered the then Creative Head of Ashoka, Pritha Dalal, the lady quipped, “None of the shows are entirely based on another film or TV series, but certain parts in them are. What I believe is that as a writer, people might get influenced by certain storylines and believe that they can include such things in their story as well, but in a different manner. As a creative person, it is the decision that the entire team takes and I whole-heartedly believe how the writer recreate the already told story.”

Well as for audience going by the TRP charts, we don’t think they have any issues with such ‘inspiration’ or ‘adaptation’. Even we have to admit that our show makers do know how to present the old wine in a new bottle.

So let’s get ‘inspired’ too with such trendsetter plots!!
