As expected, Sreeramchandra from Hyderabad took home the Indian Idol trophy. Though the finale was well fought between the top three – Bhoomi, Rakesh and Sreeram – the Hyderabadi potta who is already an established playback singer in the Charminara city was always the audience favourite. August 15 saw the top three contestants singing along with celebrated singers like Shankar Mahadevan, Alisha Chinai and Richa Sharma with the icing on the cake being Amitabh Bachchan’s presence at the glittering event to crown the winner. He announced the winner in style by pressing a button on a remote control with Sreeram’s face beaming on the giant screen. The Big B also helped Sreeram deliver his final speech as the singer was overwhelmed with emotions. TellyChakkar spoke to Sreeram minutes after him winning the fifth season of Indian Idol. What was the first reaction when you saw your picture on the giant screen? I was numb. In fact, I still can't believe I am the 5th Indian Idol. When I am talking to you holding the trophy in my hands, it is like living a dream. In the finale, I had my greatest experience in my life. Mr. Bachchan announcing my name…unbelievable! You were always confident and comfortable throughout the competition. What is the secret? You looked composed even today! I always believed in giving my 100% for the show. I have been consistent throughout the competition because I always kept that as an objective in mind. The judges were also very kind and encouraging. They always helped and motivated us to sing better. In the last three months, I have learnt so many things which I will never forget. My victory also proves if you work with honesty, you will get the result sooner or later. I have a big responsibility on my shoulders now. India has chosen me and it's my turn now to reaffirm their belief in me. You are an established singer in Hyderabad. What motivated you to participate in Indian Idol? I always wanted to establish the fact that there is a guy named Sreeram who can sing. I wanted the entire nation to hear me. I am happy the audience has appreciated my singing style. In the last few weeks when we were performing in all the outdoor events, I got to know how popular I am and how much people liked my voice. It was an extremely encouraging experience. How is the new Indian Idol celebrating? I want to do my bit for the country now and meet and perform in front of them. However, that is going to take some time. Today, we have a party with the 13 finalists, judges and crew members and I am looking forward to that. I had prayed for my success to Sai Baba and Balaji and will definitely visit the temples to pay my regards.
