Men are more humourous than women. However, Sonia Rakkar has constantly made a mockery of this notion with her hilarious acts in The Great Indian Comedy Show. It's just not on screen, but if ever you confront her, this Punjabi pataka will have you in splits. Come this Monday, the bubbly actress will not only tickle your ribs but will also fry your bhejas (brains) in SAB's new daily comedy show, SAB ka Bheja Fry. Sonia talks on her new show and more in a fun-filled chat with Mayur Lookhar. Why did you choose to act in SAB ka Bheja Fry? It's an innovative show and for the first time I'm getting to enact varied characters. That's precisely what caught my eyes. With SAB ka Bheja Fry, do you want to entertain people or fry their bhejas (brains)? Well, we want to fry their bhejas. After watching a few episodes, they'll derive pleasure in their bhejas being fried. We struggled hard to find a suitable title. Finally, we had to settle for this. Few actors in SAB ka Bheja Fry are simultaneously doing Ranvir, Vinay aur Kaun. Why didn't you take it? When it comes to comedy, I've always preferred doing a single show. After all, I would have done the same thing (gags) there too. I would have given a thought if the show was Ranvir, Vinay aur Sonia. In its present format, I would have gone unnoticed. Does that mean your association with Star One has come to an end? No. I didn't break ties with them. It's the other way round. With their new show SAB TV aims to appeal to the younger audience. Does that mean you'll aren't looking to appease the adults? Not at all. In fact, senior citizens are the ones that watch our shows. The youth of this country refrain from watching our shows. They are busy with their jobs, studies and partying. The show has youthful cast and with it, we hope to cut across all ages. Tell us about your character Laila Majnu? Laila is a beautiful Punjabi girl but her husky voice drives all men away. Thus, she struggles to find her Majnu. Will you merely stick to comedy? No. I have done different roles as well. I was doing a negative act in Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon ki. I've taken a break from it now. I'm playing an alien in Disney's Agadam Bagdam Tigdam, I've also acted in social shows. But isn't comedy close to your heart? Well, comedy comes natural to me as I'm a Sardar. In real life, I'm as jovial as my on-screen characters. Do you get offended when people crack jokes on Sardars? A smile always has a positive effect on any individual. If cracking jokes on people of my community can amuse others, then there's no harm in it. Often, I make fun of myself too. How do you rate yourself as a comic actor? Honestly speaking, I don't rate myself highly. For years, I've worked with brilliant actors such as Suresh Menon, Kiku. When you work alongside these men, you're bound to improve. So, how have you changed as an actor? Earlier, I used to struggle enacting tricky characters but now I'm comfortable with anything. What about films? I'm happy doing television. Besides, I don't have the energy to run to various director's offices and request them Sir, please take me. The television industry itself is so huge. I'm of the view that television is given a step-motherly treatment. But wouldn't you be temped if a good role comes you way? Indeed, I will. I'm always open to playing challenging roles. For instance, I wouldn't mind playing a mentally retarded girl. Can you elaborate on your background? I was born in Bangalore. My father worked for the Indian Air force. So, we've shifted our base regularly. I completed Law from Chandigarh College. I have a brother and sister. I've always been a daddy's girl. Daughters of defence personnel have become a common sight both in TV and Bollywood. What's so special about them? It's because we are raised in a disciplined and an independent environment. When I was 13, my father stopped giving me pocket money. I've earned petty cash by working in garages and gardening. From an early age, you're facing the real world. So, it helps in building up your confidence. What got you into acting? After I obtained my law degree, I arrived in Mumbai to apply in Zee TV as a News anchor. Unfortunately, I kept giggling while reading. It didn't take them too long for them to send me out. I auditioned for The Great Indian Comedy show and luckily, I passed. You're munching on salads. So, are you a health freak? I'm having this as I had a late breakfast. I don't work out. Swimming and cycling keeps me fit. More than swimming or cycling, I reckon it's your jovial nature that keeps you fit? You've hit the nail on the head. I've inherited humour from my family. My father often utters senseless jokes. Mom too isn't far behind. Basically, we're one happy family. You're still single. So, how will you like your ideal man to be? Either he'll have to be completely innocent or one who's seen it all and done it all. The former is a rarity in this day and age, so, I'll have to keep searching for the latter.
