MUMBAI: Sunil Chhetri has been making headlines for all the right reasons. 

The Indian Footballer and captain of Indian Football Team has made the country proud once again.  Sunil has scored a total of 74 goals which are two more than Lionel Messi. He has overtaken international celebrity footballer Lionel Messi and became the second-highest active international goal scorer. Ronaldo is currently leading the list with 103 goals.

Sunil Chhetri is also only one score behind to enter the list of International Football’s all-time top 10 goal scorers. Currently, the 10th position in the list is held by Sandor Kocsis from Hungary, Kunishige Kamamoto from Japan, and Bashar Abdullah from Kuwait with a score of 75 goals. All this happened in one of the recent matches of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup 2023 at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium at Al Sadd Club in Doha. He scored two goals in the second half which helped India defeat Bangladesh. 

FIFA World Cup shared the news in one of their recent tweets. “He’s now got more than Messi! Sunil Chhetri’s double earns the Blue Tigers a 2-0 win in #WCQ and moves him on to 74 international goals – above Lionel Messi and one-off entering world football’s all-time top 10”

This win is not a common one and usual one, because this has led India to the third spot in Group E and marks India’s first victory in a World Cup Qualifier away from the last 20 years. India will next face Afghanistan in the qualifiers on June 15.
