A choreographer has to think and design acts which are mentally and physically challenging - Jay Kumar Nair

Jay Kumar Nair
Choreographer Jay Kumar Nair has come a long way from being a contestant on Dance India Dance to becoming a choreographer on the same show. Currently he is seen as one of the skippers of Zee TV’s DID Super Moms (Esselvision). We contacted the man to understand more about his role as a skipper and choreographer on the show. For many out there, choreography would mean an easy job, but Jay Kumar Nair has a different definition for it. “It’s not at all easy. I am usually rehearsing with the moms in my group from morning till late in the night. It is a stressful job as you have to put in your best performance week after week. Moreover you are not just giving one act. One has at least three acts to work on every week.” He goes on to say, “My parents and siblings used to think that choreography is an easy job but after they watched me work in the rehearsal hall they have realized how tough it is. A choreographer has to think and design acts which are mentally and physically challenging.” No matter how difficult the job may seem, Jay wants to be there for his dancers at any given point of time, as he states, “They are here to be a part of this competition which anyways adds to the stress level. And if I am not there for them it would worsen the situation. I have to be there to support them, to teach them and that’s what I do every day. In fact I have heard other contestants saying that I give maximum time to my team which is a good thing.” The choreographer also puts in a lot of hardwork as he wants to get the best of comments from the judges (Marzi, Farah and Terence), “I would never want to hear from judges that I disappointed them. In fact, I don’t even like to hear such words for other skippers as I know all of us are working hard to make this show a huge success.” Jay will be seen getting a grand salute for all his performances in the coming week as he avers, “We shot for the Sunday episode yesterday and I got a grand salute from the judges for all my performances.” Talking about the moms in his team he tells us, “All of them are hard working. Shivangi is a Kathak dancer which is her strength, but at the same time she has been giving contemporary and hip-hop performances too. Everybody thought that Divya was a weak dancer but look at her now; she has turned out to be the strongest of all.” Jay recently lost on Manpriya better known as Mannu on the show last week. “Mannu got eliminated last week, but that too came after all other skippers’ dancers were eliminated. I think that’s simply because I work on the positive and the negative points of my team members. I know that if a mom does not know a certain dance form I cannot teach her that in a week’s time. So I continue teaching them for two to three weeks and then use it in the choreography.” Ask him if he sees one of the moms from his team as a winner he is quick to say, “I have never thought about winning. For me the most important thing is to showcase my talent. I just hope the best person wins.” Lastly he tells us that he wants to choreograph in films and also aims to become a director someday. We wish you luck, Jay!!!
