Bhavani Kaku aka Kishori Shahane has been in the industry for more than two decades. She has been a prominent name in the Hindi and Marathi industry with some blockbuster films and shows. We got on a call with the actress, she took us on a delirious tour with her favourites.

What is that one soul food that you adore the most?

I have a sweet tooth, I am always tempted to have sweets whenever they are in front of me. I do try to control myself from breaking my regime. When it comes to festive seasons I cannot resist Ukdi Cha Modaks, I still remember while Ganpati was on, I visited my friends and neighbours places for darshan and I couldn't resist them ask Ukdi Cha Modaks as they are made in the festival only. Apart from them, even churma cha laadu are my most favourite. There is this Gujarati neighbour in my society, every year in Ganpati I ask her if she has made them and I get to devour the laddoos.

Who has been your biggest critique?

I feel I am my worst critique, I really don't like my own work much often although it has been applauded. Apart from me, I feel my mother is my biggest critique. I still remember when I told her about my character Bhavani, I was quite sceptical about her reaction but she told me, 'Arey wah, you are doing such an interesting character after soo long. More than my critique she has always been confident about my work.

If you were to cook an authentic Maharashtrian meal for your guests, what would be the must-haves in it?

In the initial days of my wedding, I used to make Shrikhand every day at home. It is a blissful process to make it at home with milk, curd, dry fruits and sweet spices. So yes Shrikhand for sure, apart from that not so Marathi but delicious mutton would be included. Puran Poli, Bharla Vangi for sure, one dish I would call myself expert and making. Puri, Pithla bhakhri with thecha would make a perfect meal and not forget Kanda (onions).

Farmers in the village usually have Jhunka which is like sattu with Bajra/Jowar Bhakri, thecha that is green chillies-garlic-oil, and Kanda is their ideal meal, with all the nutritions. I have a ritual in my house, before cooking a meal I do ask the preferences for food. Nowadays, everyone has customised meals so it is always better to ask before cooking a full-fledged meal for them.
