MUMBAI: Television shows are a major part of everyone's lives. Viewers watch their favourite shows on a regular basis and enjoy them with their family.

There are many characters that went on to become cult classics and are still remembered by the audiences.

Television shows are responsible for not only creating some great characters but also some cliched characters.

However, as times have changed, so have the content and the perspective of the characters.

Viewers used to always see some characters presented in a typical way, for instance, a dominating husband or a cunning mother-in-law who is always behind her daughter-in-law.

But now, there are many shows in the current times where the makers have managed to change the entire definition of a mother-in-law.

There are several shows where a mother-in-law is portrayed in a completely different way, which points towards the progressive society.

So, let's take a look at some of the most caring and loving mothers-in-law of the small screens who proves that not all sasu maas are the same.

1. Rupali Ganguly as Anupamaa in Anupamaa

She is already in everyone's hearts with her excellent portrayal as a lady who never gave up after her life took a huge turn. Anupamaa is shown as single and independent mother and most important a caring mother-in-law who treats her daughter-in-law just like her own daughter. The progressive attitude of Anupamaa towards her bahus is something that we rarely see in the real world.

2. Bharati Patil as Ashwini in Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Mein

Honestly, we have never seen as sweet and caring a mom-in-law as Ashwini on screen. She is one darling saas that any bahu would love to have. Ashwini has herself gone through a lot, but she has never treated her bahu Sai the same way. In fact, she has always supported Sai by going against her family, especially her son.

3. Mallika Nayak as Sharda in Yeh Hai Chahatein

The character of Sharda is one of the most loved characters of the show. Sharda has been a pillar of support to Preesha. Well, she is not like an ordinary mom-in-law who has felt the need to dominate her bahu and keep her in control. Sharda has given all the love and support to Preesha. Indeed, they are the most lovable saas-bahu pairs of the small screens.

4. Asmita Ajgaonkar as Sharda in Mehndi Hai Rachne Wali

Asmita's character Sharda has broken a major myth that moms-in-law can only be evil and troublesome for a bahu. With Pallavi losing her husband, Sharda not only supported her but she made sure she gave the same love to her in the absence of her son. Sharda has been a major source of strength and the reason behind Pallavi's success. Who needs anyone else when a mom-in-law turns out to be the biggest supporter!

5. Geeta Tyagi as Jaya Rao in Mehndi Hai Rachne Wali

Jaya's character majorly supported Pallavi way before she became her daughter-in-law. She happily accepted Pallavi and decided to get her son married to her even though she knew she was a widow. Jaya broke this major myth that no saas would want a widow to marry her son. Furthermore, Jaya has shown her support more to Pallavi than Raghav as she knew that Pallavi can never be wrong.

Well, these actresses have taken their characters to next level not just by performing well but also creating a difference in society by portraying such characters.

So, who is your favourite saas? Tell us in the comments.
