Poonam Dhillon talks about her role in Sony TV's Ekk Nayi Pehchaan

Poonam Dhillon
The very pretty and talented Poonam Dhillon, who was last seen in Bigg Boss Season 3 in 2009 has re-entered the television scene with Sony Entertainment Television’s Ekk Nayi Pehchaan (Jay and Kinnari Mehta Productions) that debuted on screen on 23 December (2013). Meeting the woman at a recently held press launch of the show, one could not help but get mesmerized by her beauty and radiance that she has been maintaining all these while. As we mentioned it, she blushed and thanked us saying, “If you are happy from within, you’ll always look good; it’s all about the attitude.” Poonam, who has already been a part of TV with Andaaz way back in 1995, says that she is one of the first film persons who jumped the TV bandwagon. “I think I have been a trendsetter for film stars moving to TV. But yes, it’s my debut since it’s the first daily show I am doing. And in these years, I am glad to see so many changes in the TV domain and it’s all for the better.TV is no longer the poor cousin of Bollywood and has its own identity. It needs a good budget to make a high-quality show these days,” she observed. Describing her role, the actress stated, “This is an author-backed role. Having being adapted from a play Sharda, which is the name of my character, I play the central role in this show. And this character is very well etched. She, being a perfect wife and mother, is still looked down because she is not educated. Her children do not respect her and that has made her a docile person who gets scared at the slightest of high tone.” So what kind of a relationship does she share with her children in the show, we asked. “We are almost like friends. It’s the time when it’s important to be frank with your children. And I am a very curious person who likes learning new things every day. And my children today help me do that along. We fight, go out together and have a great time. They also help me decide on what should I wear when I am going out,” she smilingly answered. And being a Bigg Boss Season 3 finalist is she following the current season on Colors? “I don’t get time to watch the show but since my son watches it I do catch it sometimes. Bigg Boss definitely does good to your career. Take my case, soon after the reality show ended I was flooded with offers on television but then I wasn’t ready to take up just anything. And then working long hours back then was a complete no-no,” she informed. Then what made her choose this daily, we queried. “Now that my children have all grown up, I can spend long hours away from them and secondly this was a show that had me playing a central character and not a sidey role. Also I have known the producers for long and believed in them that they will do something different. The show also projects a very important topic of the empowerment of women and will bring in confidence in millions of women out there,” she maintained. Did Poonam get inspired by the film since the show, which is said to be loosely based on Sridevi’s English Vinglish? “I really admire Sridevi and feel she is magical on screen; but yes there has been no inspiration kind of a thing here. All I can say is that both the stories had a similar topic where a woman discovers herself after a period of time and gains confidence to face the world.” Well Poonam, being such a talented artist, we know you are surely going to do well in the show.
