The sudden exit of comedian Sunil Grover from comic virtuoso Kapil Sharma’s show Comedy Nights With Kapil (Colors) prompted a whole lot of speculation on the status of the relationship between Kapil and Grover. While Grover spoke exclusively to Tellychakkar giving Kapil a clean chit and not imputing his exit from the show to Kapil, Kapil too finally broke his silence and came clean on the alleged rift with Grover. Says Kapil, “I am very fond of Sunil. And he is fond of me. There’s no question of an ego clash between us. Something has hurt him. I don’t know what it is. But I will get him back on the show.” Kapil tries to rationalize Gutthi/Grover’s anger saying, “He is an artiste. He is touchy. But I’ll be bringing him back. We’re speaking every day and we hope to sort out the matter. In fact I’m planning to take him on my shows outside Mumbai. So he would be in a better mood.” But what exactly happened? “Choti-choti baatein kabhi chubh jaatin hain (sometimes trivial issues get blown out of proportion). An artiste is so close to God. I am sure Sunil realizes that he is an integral part of the show. I feel he will be back. Between us, we’ve no problem. Mujhe toh unke saath badaa mazaa aata hai. We plan the comedy together.” Kapil reveals how he lets Sunil’s Gutthi take centre stage when he’s arrives on the show. “You must have seen the minute Gutthi comes I sit back on the sofa and watch what happens. I can relax when he is around. Very often I am forced to intervene because the interaction between the star and the audience gets uncomfortable. When Hrithik Roshan was on our show someone asked him to show his 6-pack. I had to intervene. But when the going is smooth I sit back and enjoy the humour just like the audience. This is what happens when Sunil is around.” Kapil feels the show Comedy Nights With Kapil is much larger than both Grover and he. “The show has done all of us a world of good. Even I was doing comedy for 7 years before Comedy Nights With Kapil. But it didn’t get me anywhere until now. The show is much larger than all of us.” Modestly Kapil attributes the success of Comedy Nights to the audience. “They create the moments that gives us cues for the comedy. Without them we would be nothing.” Ending the topic on a positive note Kapil said, “Sunil is hurt about something. I’ll get him back.”
