Scroll down to view the compilation of Indian TV stars who stepped into the shoes of Indian superheroes who feature(d) on television sets...

MUMBAI: Just like the DC and Marvel superheroes of Hollywood, even Bollywood has it's own superheroes like Krrish, Flying Jatt, Ra One, etc. whom children look upto to draw lifetime inspiration from. Same applies for the Hindi entertainment industry which also showcased the nation's biggest local superheroes through famous TV shows like Shaktimaan, Captain Vyom, Hatim, etc.

If not today's kids, it was the '90s kids who still treasure and cherish the value of these previously popular local superheroes who won over the nation's kids with the display of their superpowers and most importantly, focussing on the victory of 'good over evil'.

Let's take a look at the telly fames who got to portray these underrated Indian superheroes.

1. Mukesh Khanna as Shaktimaan

Producer Mukesh Khanna played the iconic superhero of the '90s era who went on to be the most popular and loved Indian superhero of all times. Mukesh portrayed the character of Shaktimaan and his alter ego 'Pandit Gangadhar Vidhyadhar Mayadhar Omkarnath Shastri', who was a photographer for the newspaper 'Aaj Ki Aawaz'. Shaktimaan was considered as the Indian version of 'Superman' and he could control the five elements of nature: Space, Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

The Hindi language superhero television show aired on DD National from 13th September 1997 to 27th March 2005.

2. Milind Soman as Captain Vyom

[[{"fid":"15542319","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"2":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":300,"width":232,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"2"}}]]

Actor Milind Soman played this iconic superhero's character. This show was India's first Hindi sci-fi and well-infrastructured as it's plot revolved around the year 2123 - 2220. Humans were shown taking over the solar system and setting up space stations on other planets. Meanwhile, Capt. Vyom got to unlock his powers through yoga and his mission focussed upon recapturing 12 prisoners.

This Indian television series aired on DD National in 1998.

3. Rahil Azam as Hatim

[[{"fid":"15542329","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"3":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":300,"width":232,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"3"}}]]

Being inspired by an Arabian poet name 'Hatim al-Tai', the plot was set in the Middle East around the Middle Ages. The story revolved around the son of Yemen's Emperor, who was named Hatim. Rahil's character aimed at spreading the message of 'peace' and 'goodness' throughout. The plot followed a somewhat fairytale and treasure-hunt kinda theme, which surely was overloaded with multiple adventurous scenarios.

This Indian television series aired on Star Plus from 26th December 2003 to 12th November 2004.

4. Mukesh Khanna as Aryamaan - Brahmaand Ka Yoddha

[[{"fid":"15542349","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"4":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":300,"width":232,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"4"}}]]

This was Mukesh Khanna's sci-fi superhero avatar and the show aired on DD National. This show came after Mukesh's Shaktimaan in 1997 and held the record of the 'most expensive Indian television drama ever' for a short period. Mukesh's character 'Aryamaan' was the human warrior prince of the 'Thar Empire of the Aariyana Galaxy', which is believed to be situated millions of light-years away from Earth.

This show was considered as the Indian version of Hollywood's Star Wars saga.

5. Raghubir Yadav as Chacha Chaudhary

[[{"fid":"15542359","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"5":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":163,"width":232,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"5"}}]]

This show was the 'live-action' version of the animated series under the same title, which was originally based on the very famous Indian comic book character 'Chacha Chaudhary', which was created by cartoonist Pran Kumar Sharma.

If anyone has an ability to be faster than a computer who uses that ability to help people, he/ she deserves to be on the superhero list. We also have 'Sabu' from the planet Jupiter who possessed superhuman strengths.

6. Tanvi Hedge as Son Pari

[[{"fid":"15542409","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"6":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":300,"width":232,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"6"}}]]

Son Pari is an Indian children's fairytale fantasy television saga which followed the story of 'Fruity', a young girl who received a magical gem that, when rubbed, summons a fairy named 'Son Pari' and her friend 'Altu'. Although this was more 'fairytale-themed', Tanvi Hedge's strong-fairy character while protecting Fruity from all enemies and adversaries can't be undermined as per the typical 'superhero requisites' as it involved massive adventurous acts of bravery.

The show aired from 23rd November 2000 to 1st October 2004 on Star Plus.

7. Dev Joshi as Baal Veer

[[{"fid":"15542419","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"7":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":300,"width":232,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"7"}}]]

Starring Dev Joshi as Baal Veer, this Indian superhero show is highly cherished by the '00s kids and the zoomers. As compared to the earlier shows above, Bal Veer's cinematography, VFX and CGI wonders have elated the bar of Indian superhero-based shows' visual delivery.

The fantasy show premiered on 8th October 2012 on SAB TV and aired 1111 episodes. After briefly going off-air on 4th November 2016, the makers returned with it's sequel titled Baalveer Returns, that premiered on 10th September 2019 and is airing on-screen to date.
