There is no rocket science to the success of TV shows - Producer Saurabh Tewari

Saurabh Tewari
Saurabh Tewari, the man who has managed to touch viewers’ hearts with his magnificent show Madhubala- Ek Ishq Ek Junoon on Colors is back with another show on the same channel, Rangrasiya. Saurabh who owns the production house Nautanki Telefilms earlier was at the helm of NDTV Imagine and Colors. Today, the man is a successful producer with two shows currently on air (Madhubala and Do Dil Ek Jaan) and Rangrasiya happens to be his third in line. We at Tellychakkar.com caught up with the man during the launch of the show. And the first thing that we asked him was about his interest on making love stories. With a smile on his face, Saurabh said, “I think I enjoy making love stories as they can actually grab maximum eyeballs. Also there are different phases in one’s life, so it’s not like we will only make love stories. Rangrasiya might be our last love story, you never know. But this show is very different and intense and has more than a simple boy meet girl love story.” Ask him about the striking similarity visible in all his three shows, wherein his lead guys are portrayed in slightly grey shades, and he explained, “Well personally I feel guys are idiots (winks). But none of them had been brutal, but have angst without any reason. I like guys to be grey because that makes them real and I think the female audiences also like bad men, so it works both ways.” Saurabh, who earlier handled the creativity being at the helm of channels and is now a producer, further stated, “There is no rocket science to making a good show. Sometimes everything can go right or wrong, it all depends on the mood of the audience. Casting and execution are really important and above that, the characters should be able to connect with the audience. There are ups and downs in every show, you just should not give up, and that’s the key (smiles).” Ashish Sharma, the lead in Rangrasiya is treading the path of Shakespeare’s Othello. When asked what made him touch the great writer’s characters, he averred, “His plays and characters have a bigger canvas and are complex, thus can come out in a very interesting way if projected well. Our show that is based in the beautiful and vast deserts of Rajasthan needed something of the same standards.” And what about having a filmy touch to all his shows, we asked him next. “I believe that TV is no less than films and hence it should be visually grand. Also today you can manage to get your scenes done on any scale you want. There is a lot to experiment and our production house will always continue with this standard or actually get better.” On the lessons learnt after making three shows, the producer said, “Your storyline needs to be fast or else people tend to lose interest. We have been lucky with Madhubala where the leads got together post 100 episodes, but we won’t repeat the mistake with this show. We also have a great research team that helps us function according to the pulse of the audience. Also I think the trend of dailies should just be done and finite series or seasons should be included to help producers churn out better plots,” concluded the man. We wish his show great luck!
