Tune mera tail light toda, main tera muh tod doonga: Auto rickshawallah attacks Monaz Mevawala with a bamboo stick

Monaz Mevawala

To hell with issues of corruption and secularism that are being bandied about by good for nothing politicians. We say securing the safety of women is the need of the hour. In a spine chilling incident, which only brings to light how unsafe women are in our city, a hooligan auto rickshaw driver today (21 April 2014) attacked and threatened Monaz Mevawala in broad daylight. Luckily, the actress was driving her car and escaped unhurt but not before the thug destroyed the wiper and side view mirror of her vehicle. When Tellychakkar.com reached Monaz on phone, the actress was yet to recover from the shock that she suffered this afternoon. With much courage, she narrated the ordeal to us.
The entire incident happened on the bustling Goregaon S V road at 1.30 pm while Monaz was on her way to work in her white coloured Swift. As per Monaz, the moment she entered S V road, an unidentified auto driver who had parked his auto just in front of her at the signal, started staring and checking her out. Even as Monaz grew uncomfortable, the man continued with his vigil and even allegedly craned his neck to look back and have a better view of the actress almost like a lech. Not done with that, the driver also allegedly tried to block Monaz’s car by purposely driving his auto in her way. Finally, when Monaz tried to overtake the auto, driver flew into a rage. Charging at her with full speed, the driver tried dashing his auto with Monaz’s car which ended up breaking his tail light. This further angered him and he immediately drew out a huge bamboo stick hidden in his rickshaw and threatened to hit Monaz black and blue in broad daylight. “Tune mera tail light toda, main tera muh tod doonga,” screamed the maniac as a frightful Monaz looked on.
Seeing the situation spinning out of control, a scared Monaz drove away only to see the driver following her in his auto. Approaching her from the right at high speed, the thug apparently smashed her car with his bamboo stick. Displaying immense presence of mind, Monaz stopped her car, bolted herself tight inside, fished out her cellphone and clicked pictures of him vandalizing her car. In the video, which Monaz has posted on her Facebook, a lean auto guy can be seen slapping the car’s mirror and breaking the wiper before returning to his rickshaw.

Though the incident left Monaz thoroughly shaken, the spunky actress drove to Madh to complete her portion of shoot for Savdhan India. “It would have been unprofessional on my part to skip the day’s shoot. I will be lodging a police complaint later tonight after my shoot,” said Monaz.
What is however downright deplorable is the fact that not a single person came forward to help Monaz. “I was alone and helpless and not a single one came forward to help. After auto guy drove away, a biker approached me and asked in a pitiable tone, ‘Kya hua madam?’ Is this the Mumbai I know?’ asked an emotionally charged Monaz quizzically.
While the video will of course help the police in tracking down this rogue driver and charge him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the larger question to be asked is when will women feel safe in our country? And have we reached a state of complete insensitiveness that when a lout auto driver attacks a defenseless woman in broad daylight, all that we can do is just stay mute and watch. Jaago Mumbai Jaago. Soon it could be your mothers and sisters who will be at the mercy of such men.
