BBC film India's daughter shouldn't be banned - Paresh Rawal, Naseeruddin Shah & Annu Kapoor

Paresh Rawal today strongly pressed for controversial BBC documentary that features an interview of Jyoti Singh rapist Mukesh Singh to be shown in India. Paresh who is also an elected BJP MP vociferously argued in favour of the documentary and said that he is not in favour of any ban being imposed on the same.

The documentary which was beamed by BBC in UK was banned by the Indian government. The film which was earlier available on the internet and YouTube was subsequently pulled down after Government of India exerted pressure on Google and other concerned authorities. The ban meant NDTV which was slated to telecast the video on Women's Day too couldn't beam it any longer.

Coming down heavily on the decision of banning the documentary, Paresh in reply to our question for a reaction told us, "The documentary should be shown here. It should not be banned. If Nathuram Godse (assassin of Mahatma Gandhi) can be heard in court, then why can't such a documentary be shown."

The documentary which chronicles the brutal gang rape of Jyoti Singh on a moving bus has been made by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin, herself a rape victim. Criticising the government for imposing a ban, Naseeruddin Shah said, "I find it impossible to understand why it has been banned. This ban is beyond my comprehension. This movie should be seen by all. It shows the mindset that many of us suffer from. We all suffer from the same malady. A lot of old uncles make these same remarks without being castigated. The person who made this film is herself a rape victim and I dare say she understand the pain herself. I have not seen the film but from what I have heard about its content, I feel the ban should be revoked. Free speech shouldn't be curtailed."

Senior actor Annu Kapoor made an impassioned plea to the government asking it to be released across all mediums. "I sometimes wish India was Saudi Arabia. That rapist would been castrated then."

With such senior actors coming out in support of the documentary, it remains to be seen if their voices will have any effect on the Indian government.
