MUMBAI: Vidhu Vinod Chopra's film 12th Fail has been a huge hit with Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankr in the lead roles. He has earned a reputation for telling so many incredible stories in cinema over the years. The most well-known is the film series Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. In the film, Sanjay Dutt portrayed the main character. Sanjay wasn't initially selected for the movie. Vidhu Vinod Chopra disclosed in the latest interview that he had no intention of taking Sanjay for it.

The 3 Idiots and PK maker sat down for a chat with Kellogg Management School wherein he opened up on the time when Sanjay Dutt was banned in the industry. The Khalnayak actor was convicted in a terrorism case. Chopra felt that it was wrong and he went to Sanjay Dutt's house and announced a film with him. Sunil Dutt warned him saying that he (Chopra) might get banned by the industry too. However, Vidhu Vinod Chopra never cared about it.

After Sanjay Dutt came out of the jail, he called Chopra up right from the car. Sanjay told him that he wanted his first comeback film with him. But the filmmaker denied him saying, "I’ll never make a film with you, I just announced it because it was the right thing to do." Vidhu Vinod Chopra calls Sanjay a good man but a simple man. You see, Sanjay actually thought that he would work with the filmmaker. Chopra told Sanjay that he would only work with him if the equation changed because he could not exploit a good deed.

The part of Jimmy Shergill was given to him by Vinod Chopra. The plan was for Shah Rukh Khan to play Munna Bhai at that point. SRK quit, though, due to some throat problems. Then Vidhu decided that Sanjay was the most suitable candidate for the part.

He reveals, "You’re doing Munna Bhai’. And he’s such a simple fellow, he said, ‘I know’. I said, ‘No, not that role, main Munna Bhai’. He said, ‘Okay, if you say so, I’ll do it’. He never reads a script..."

Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. was Rajkumar Hirani's directorial debut. The filmmaker would frequently file complaints to Chopra whenever Sanjay failed to be at work on time.
