When Amrita Singh taught SRK to dance happily

Shah Rukh Khan
No one in Bollywood makes more money dancing than SRK. The superstar is a hit at weddings where shaking his famous leg helps him earn a few millions in a span of few minutes. His world tours too are blockbuster hits with NRIs and foreigners queuing up to see the star in action. For a star who makes millions grooving, it may come as a surprise that the man was not a great dancer when he started out in films. In fact, by SRK’s own admission, he had trouble learning to perfect dips (a dance step) during the filming of King Uncle. SRK took his time and finally learnt the right way to dip which led to him doing ‘dips’ in as many 22 films that followed. SRK was speaking at the launch of Zee TV’s Dil Se Naache Indiawaale where he emphasized on the importance of dancing from the heart rather than the mind. “Dance is an expression which irrespective of any language connects with our heart. Whenever I see any dance reality shows, I find the ones who are rejected the most amazing.” Interestingly, SRK’s first role as an actor required him to dance on stage. “Barry John had cast me in his play ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ where my role was that of a dancer. So even when I started acting professionally, my first role was that of a dancer.” The superstar candidly confessed on how he learnt to dance from his heart courtesy Saif Ali Khan’s ex-wife, Amrita Singh who was also his co-star in Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman.“ When we were shooting for the movie, Amrita Singh told me that it if one can’t dance with his hands and legs, it is important to sport a happy face while moving, When you see a man dancing with happiness writhe all over his face, you too will start enjoying his dance even his moves aren’t close to being perfect.” Well, no wonder SRK is such a cheerful dancer today.
